🚲 I went to Deerfield Cyclery expecting to learn about bikes. Joyful Places, chapter 14. Greg and his wife Kathy have owned the shop for 38 years. The store itself has been on Waukegan Road in Deerfield since 1954. He bikes three times a week, knows every customer by name, and runs a year-round indoor cycling club so his riders can stay in shape and stay connected all winter long. But what really caught me attention... For the past 15 years, Greg has partnered with Holy Spokes, a foundation that collects donated bikes and brings them to kids in North Chicago. The kids do not just receive a bike. They earn it by completing a mentorship program built around leadership and role models. Greg says it has been a huge blessing to him. 🤍 He has customers from Evanston to Lake Bluff. And he has watched kids who bought their first bikes here at six years old come back as parents, bringing their own six year olds in. That is 70 years of the same corner. The same community.
