Today we are highlighting the leadership legacy of Girl Scout trailblazer Josephine Holloway. Holloway was born in 1898 in Cowpens, South Carolina, and later moved to Tennessee, where she attended Fisk University. After graduating, she worked at the Bethlehem Center, a social settlement home for at-risk women and girls. During her time there, she began introducing Girl Scout-inspired activities and programming for girls at the Center. In 1933, Holloway wanted to form a Girl Scout troop for African-American girls, but the council denied her request. In true trailblazer fashion, Holloway did not quit. Instead, she established an unofficial Girl Scout troop and encouraged her friends to do the same while continuing to seek official status. Her efforts paid off in 1942 when the local council finally officially recognized all African-American troops. Holloway retired from Girl Scouts in 1963 and was given special recognition by the Cumberland Valley Girl Scout Council at their 1976 Bicentennial celebration. We honor her enduring legacy as a true trailblazer for all girls
