Embrace Fertility

Hi! 👋🏻 I’m Lauren, fertility nurse expert & trusted partner for fertility and IVF support. 🦋

Operating as usual

There are many fertility truths out there… but I’m here to tell you that “Just have sex every day and you’ll get pregnant!” is NOT one of them.

Just a normal day at work, with my supervisor watching my every move… 😂

We have to embrace laughter where we can. What’s making you giggle this morning?

Whatever IVF throws at you this week, I know you can handle it. 💪 I’m always here if you need support!

When someone needs heart surgery, they don’t think twice about asking their referring physician, PCP, friends, family, and neighbors for solid recommendations. They’ll likely also do their own research and weigh multiple options.

It seems that in other areas of healthcare, if something is wrong medically, people want to go to a doctor who is trusted, comforting, brilliant, and has a good success rate.

It's normal to do due diligence before deciding who they want to do such an important life-changing procedure.

IVF is no different. You deserve to be in good hands. If you’re not feeling supported at your clinic, you’re allowed to change your mind!

During these calls, my clients & I:

1. Discuss their blood work and ultrasound results
2. Review medication instructions to ensure they are clear
3. Go over my suggestions for questions they may want to discuss with their fertility team
4. & talk through anything else that is helpful to them!

These calls are just a portion of what my clients get out of IVF Coaching, but the calm and relief they bring are priceless. Learn more at https://www.embracefertility.com/ivfcyclepartner. 💙

IVF without a coach: Stressed, overwhelmed, consumed.

IVF with me: Clear, confident, in control.

I’m so excited to share that I’ve completed the ASRM Certificate Course of Nursing in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility! For this certification, I received specialized training in REI, targeted towards both male and female infertility. After 19 years of being in the fertility field, attending training and seminars, and working in many different roles, I’m really grateful I had this opportunity to hone in on and test my REI knowledge.

I also want to share the “real” side of this achievement. I registered for this certification in 2020 and intended to get right to work… but the pandemic had other plans*. I completed it this past December, and instead of beating myself up over not finishing it ‘quickly enough,” I just want to celebrate that I made it a priority to complete a professional certification AT ALL during this time.

If you’ve been putting things off, feeling burnt out, or notice that your progress has slowed in certain areas, know that you’re not alone.

I feel empowered that I took control and got certified, even if I put it off for a bit while living through a pandemic... No matter what, accomplishing this means something to me.

I know when you’re ready to take on that next project, course, or learning opportunity, you will. Until then, I hope you can give yourself some grace. We’re all doing the best we can.

I used to check my email when I got up to pee at 2AM. You know, just in case one of my patients needed me. Normal stuff!

In 16 years as a nurse at a world-renowned fertility clinic, I worked as a patient care coordinator, director of nursing, practice development consultant, clinical manager of the fertility preservation program, and as a practice manager.

All of that to say: If you’re a fertility nurse or doctor simultaneously following your professional dream by helping people make babies AND feeling totally burnt out trying to do it all… I completely understand.

In 2019, I launched Embrace Fertility to fill the gap between what fertility clinics provide (clinical treatment) and what I realized what many of my patients also needed - emotional health education, wellness plans, someone to advocate for them, and a neutral partner to help make sense of it all.

If your IVF patients could use additional support, I’d be happy to provide resources about Embrace Fertility that you can share with them.

Please reach out if you have any questions! More on my website, too: https://www.embracefertility.com/ivfcyclepartner

In your experience, does a strong support system make a patient’s IVF experience less stressful?

I believe this is one of the most important things an IVF patient can do before starting their cycle: Take the time to set up their support system in advance.

For those starting IVF, I recommend asking, “Will I need…”

- Help covering tasks at work?
- Additional support with chores at home?
- Someone to mix and/or give me the injections?
- Help getting to and from appointments?
- A trusted friend to call when I’m happy?
- Someone to lean on when I’m sad?
- Assistance in understanding my treatment plan, medications, and what to expect?

Someone's support system might include friends, family, spiritual leaders, mental health professionals, or an IVF Coach. If your clinic could use a partner for their patients to lean on for emotional support and stress resilience as they navigate IVF, I’d love to talk to you about how I can help. Managing appointments, injections, medications, oh my! It’s no wonder IVF can feel like a full-time job. 🥱

IVF is time-consuming, but you don’t have to manage it alone. I’m here for you. 💙

If learning the new language that comes along with infertility and IVF gives you a headache, no worries! I am here to guide you through it all. 💆‍♀️📚 Schedule a call at the link in my bio.

1. Put yourself first (it’s not selfish!)
2. Ask for help outside of work
3. Communicate your needs at work
4. Reframe how you think about your time at work (if you’re open to it, work can serve as a retreat from the pressures of infertility)
5. Take time off if you can!

I gained insight and appreciated the perspective from such wonderful minds when recently partnering with @fertilitycircle, @ian_stones, @fertilitynutritioncoach, and @fertilitymattersatwork for a Think Tank on navigating IVF & work.

What advice would you give to someone balancing IVF & work?

I’ve written an article with 5 keys to managing the overwhelm that navigating fertility treatment can cause. These are based on my experience as a fertility nurse, Clinic Manager, and IVF Cycle Coach: https://www.embracefertility.com/post/5-keys-to-balance-ivf-and-work

I’m always open to learning more - what advice would you give?

The moment we realize our fertility team and doctors are humans, too… sigh. Your fertility clinic is doing all they can, but I know that your questions, emotional needs, and wellness needs are often left unaddressed. I am here to fill the gaps that your fertility clinic can’t support during IVF. Embrace your IVF cycle with control, confidence, and clarity with me by your side.

As a fertility professional, which infertility myth do you think is the most harmful?

A few that come to mind after years as a fertility nurse…

→ Infertility is rare (nope!)
→ Infertility only affects women (wrong again!)
→ It’s easy to get pregnant if you just relax (gee, thanks! Haven’t tried that!)

So many of us are raised to believe that when we’re ready to have a baby, it’ll just happen. Then, when it’s not that simple, we feel like a failure, like something is wrong with us and only us.

1 in 8 couples has trouble conceiving or sustaining a pregnancy. 1 in 4 women will experience a miscarriage.

These myths hurt. But each time we speak up and provide support to one another, we’re doing what we can to combat them. If you need additional information or support, that’s why I’m here.

“My doctor introduces themself to me at every appointment… even though I’ve met them countless times!”

“I’m tired of explaining my infertility and medical history over and over again at the same clinic.”

“IVF is all I can think about, but when I’m at my clinic, I feel like just a number or a box to be checked off.”

Fertility treatment is so personal, so intimate, that when our emotional needs aren’t addressed by our clinic, it can feel like a slap in the face. These are real frustrations I hear from those going through IVF.

I know these hurt, but I also understand just how much each fertility clinic is juggling.

I know fertility nurses and doctors are wearing their hearts on their sleeves, that they’re wishing for a healthy baby for you almost as hard as you are. I know they go home and cry after they have to deliver heartbreaking news. I know they want to help every single person in the world who wants a healthy baby to have one, but their time and resources and energy are severely limited.

I know because for over 16 years, that was my world. Responding to patient emails with questions about their fertility medication at 2AM. Injecting myself in front of patients to help them relax as they learned to do the same. Countless sad tears and countless happy ones, too.

Fertility medicine as a practice is focused on clinical treatment. Day in and day out your team is doing all they can to provide the absolute best clinical treatment possible.

Unfortunately, this means that emotional needs associated with care have to be marked secondary, if addressed at all. Emotional health education, wellness plans, and having a neutral partner helping to make sense of it all isn't par for the course.

That's why I am here.

That's why I care.

That’s why I founded Embrace Fertility in 2019. As a fertility nurse and previous Clinical Manager, I understand what each patient needs outside of what their fertility clinic can deliver.

If your clinic could use a partner for their patients to lean on, I’d love to talk to you about how I can help. You can reach me at https://www.embracefertility.com/contact.
