Why do we say OSU? I didn’t say why should you say OSU, its why do we at Takemichikaikan say OSU. There are many stories of the origin and usage for OSU. For me, the history doesn’t matter so much because the word has a weight of its own that is current.
We say OSU, not OSS, at Takemichikaikan as a positive response and affirmation. If someone says something that requires a “Yes”, we say “OSU”. If we are told to do something that requires effort, we say “OSU!”
Its a simple word that shows we are positive and we are ready to give 100%.
Debate its origin or usage all you want. This is what we use it for. It was taught to me by greater men than myself, so I feel it is appropriate to continue its tradition as handed down to me.
OSU!

Budo is our Backbone!
To take on a challenge you know you can achieve means nothing, to take on a challenge you are supposed to fail proves your worth.
We must improve ourselves by taking on challenges greater then what we believe in our mind to be our limits. We are always stronger then we know or believe to be true.
Karate is not about fighting, fighting is the art we use to push ourselves beyond known limits and to continue the evolution of the human spirit.
I have been criticized for my stance on competition. Some say we are to focused on winning and missing the way of Karate.
My response to this is; Karate is a way. Competition is a test. I can follow the way every second of my life because I have tested myself.
Competition in the form of combat sport is not for everyone. For those that choose to take the test, why take it if we are not prepared to win? Only one person will win a fight on paper but no person that trains, focuses, sacrifices, and risks truly loses.
If tournaments are beyond you; the challenge is in the dojo. Your tests will serve you a challenge equal to if not greater than tournaments.
Karate is an art that depends on competition. Grading is a form of competition. Anything physical that requires pas or fail, winning or losing... is a form of competition.
The fight is always within. True victory is victory over one's self. Use every available tool to test yourself. Do everything within reason possible to win. You may have to beat an opponent but strive to lift them in victory or defeat.
Without some kind of test we have no marker for our progress. Without an opponent we have nobody to test ourselves with.
Don't think you are above competition. Don't put down those that fight to win. Budo encompasses all of it. The true Karateka will win or lose with honor. The true karateka will learn from every opportunity.

Throwback Thursday - Jason Teitelbaum wins World Sabaki Challenge at Lightweight in 2006
In working to be proficient, we must strip away not add on. Truth is found at the center of all things.
Sound principles stand the test of time. Applications may change but sound principles are the foundation for everything.
