There’s a portion of every good story where the hero is rejecting the call.

The call to what, Chris?

The call to adventure.

The call that takes them out of the KNOWN reality and throws them into the UNKNOWN.

And every time, it always follows a similar arch.

First they ignore it.

Then they try to give it away to another person.

Then they finally accept it… and the story can finally begin.

Did you read that last line?

And The Story Can Finally Begin.

THIS ONLY HAPPENS… after the protagonist decides that they will accept the call and move forward.

Here’s the crazy part… none of them… NONE of them are ready.

None of them are capable of seeing the mission through to the end.

It’s the story that changes them and molds them into who they need to become to complete the quest.

So what’s the lesson?

We have to start before you’re ready.

And the story cannot progress until we step fully into the call to adventure.

So for you, my friend… let me ask…

Are you avoiding the call?

Do you feel stuck?

Do you feel like you’ve been staring at the same list of ideas or things you want to accomplish for YEARS and haven’t made any progress?

These are not the signs of someone who is in the story - no these are signs of having not accepted the call and left the comfort of the known…

But Chris… this is NOT comfortable.

No, I know. I know that. Trust me.

But on some level when we’re stuck like that, the subconscious is saying “Well, trust me… it’s better than what we’ll have to do if we leave the known.”

“What happens when we leave the known?"

Well, we’ll have to become someone new. And that is a fear your subconscious mind does not have an answer for.

I'm going to go even deeper on what to do about this on the workshop tomorrow.

When I was a kid, I was obsessed with Independence Day.

The movie, not the holiday...

But also the holiday (cuz fireworks and freedom).

There’s a scene when Jeff Goldblum’s character realizes something that no one else has realized. It’s the thing that truly kicks off the chaos of the movie…

He realized that the alien ships that are scattered around the world are all communicating a repeating code that is getting shorter and shorter - a countdown.

When he goes to relay this info to the President, he says…

“I found a signal hidden inside our own satellite system. They’re using our own satellites against us. The clock is ticking.”

This realization of the hidden commands within kicks off the chaos, yes.. but they are also the thing that ends up giving them the advantage they need to finally defeat the antagonists in the end.

There are “hidden commands” or “codes” that can help you on your path.

One of my favorite books that I listen to every year at least twice is called Theatre of The Mind by Matt Furey.

One of the things he talks about almost in passing in the book is the idea of there being “Secrets.” Hidden things that only a few know. Things that are REALLY what makes “it” work.

The example Matt Furey lays out in the book is…

-- when a monk balances on one finger… you don’t think there’s a secret to that?! Ok then you do it.--

I see this play out in Jiu Jitsu on a daily basis… There are just simply things that I do not know. These are the true secrets.

Secrets are a real thing.

Does that mean I am not equipped to do it? Or that it can't be learned? No.

It just means that there are actual secrets that once learned, make things “click.”

The same is true when trying to build a life and business as a creative.

It’s not that there’s some magic pill or trick that you can do automatically make you better or sky-rocket you to the top.

Or some secret formula that can make you a millionaire overnight. ←- (This is the B.S. that is usually touted as “secrets.”)

BUT…. There ARE what I would call…

Cheat Codes.

Things that, if you know them and use them - they will make you better over time.

The definition of a “Cheat Code” is this…

“A hidden command that unlocks an advantage in the game.”

And for creatives and owners, they just might be the thing that is missing in your work and keeping things from moving as fast as you would like…

Something I’m excited about right now is the sessions I’ve been doing for people to help them gain clarity and confidence.

My cat has a death wish…

To be fair, he’s 15 and has no effs to give anymore.

But still - he has this VERY annoying behavior that he’s developed in old age.

Well, annoying to me… smart for him.

Every morning when I cook eggs he hides and waits for me to finish.

And when I am eating, in my most vulnerable state, he jumps up on the counter and tries to lick the pan.

Every. Single. Day.

He gets eggs, I get angry… and round and round we go.

He’s always watching and waiting for just the right opportunity to pounce.

This is how your ideal clients are.

They are watching.

They are waiting for an opportunity to work with you that makes sense to them.

The problem is this…

Usually when people are curious about something, and they see it out in the wild (like an instagram post, etc) They think: “Huh! I want to try that!”

Then they keep scrolling. Not because they don’t want to work with you… but because they aren’t ready to fully commit.

Easy way to beat this?

Leave the pan on the stove.

Give them an easy opportunity to pounce on.

I call it a “Middle-Ground, Try-Before-You Buy” offer.

This type of offer gives people a chance to try you on for size before they commit going all in.

What does this look like?

It would look like a lot of things but my favorite one is the “Good Will” Workshop™.
