Team Keough provides comprehensive coaching options for powerlifting, nutrition coaching, and health

I had an unfortunate and unexpected long-term client cancelation yesterday. That does mean that I am adding an additional remote coaching client to my roster.

Here is a reminder of the programs and pricing I offer. I pride myself on giving above-market service--and producing above-market results--for below-market prices. This pricing remains the same until a price increase starting Oct. 1st.

You might not think powerlifting's come a long way, but just remember...

The Orlando Sentinel covered this world-record bench press attempt 11 years ago.

"Speed" pulls (about as fast as 39-year-old me goes nowadays) from today. I got asked a few times about how I keep great back position when I deadlift.

The secret is, if I don't, my back will explode and I will die!

Messed around with sumo today, didn't hurt my back, didn't feel weird on my pec, felt decently strong: guess that means I'm a sumo puller for the time being. 🤷

Still chunky, and eating on the 4th, plus a fabulous date night with , didn't help my waistline, but I'm getting back after it today. Even if I just drop at a rate of 1 or .5 lb/week, it's progress.

I hit a RHR PR of 50bpm today, so that's pretty nifty too. 🙌

The verdict on technique self-regulating:

1: Mostly a bad idea.

2: Kareem invents the sky hook.

Some sad 😢 and unexpected cancelations this week, so I am taking on three new powerlifting clients in July.

If interested in a spot, please schedule a consultation with me, so I can discuss your training and decide if I can help!

Everywhere you look, the advice is: stir up engagement, provoke a response.

I see it all the time from other powerlifting coaches.

In 2026, I've committed to doing 🙌positive🙌 messaging.

Young coaches, don't fall into the engagement trap--it doesn't always translate to more income.

It certainly doesn't translate to the sorts of clients who make you happy.

Signed,
A coach who only has nice clients (none of them are di*****ds)

Watching standing abs is boring as 💩, but today I have a point in showing this:

Rating of perceived exertion, reps in reserve, these constructs are all based on one unit of time: THE SET.

But, training is as creative as you make it! And you don't have to do the same rep, with the same loading strategy, until you get tired. You can do...other things.

Banded standing abs give us one awesome advantage in working sets: you can release tension (making it variable) by choking down on the band.

Voila, more reps in a fatigued state, from an exercise that costs us little to nothing on the systemic fatigue budget.

Rest pauses, cluster sets, myoreps, supersets, alternating isometrics, mechanical drop sets...you have so many opportunities to make your accessory work hold more value.

Basically, you just do your crunches with the band, and then you get tired, and then you don't clutch the band so tight, and then you do more reps, and 🎉POOF🎉 you've given your accessory work more attention than 90% of your local powerlifting gym.

Now that I've had some time to reflect:

The last week and a half has been a complete whirlwind; coaching for four days at USAPL Nationals left me short on sleep and short on time, but I left Chicago feeling nothing but motivation!

As a team, we did excellent. My lifters were the highlight; they grinded through tough lifts, took any losses in stride, and rolled with the day's punches. They performed perfectly, and made the days incredibly easy.

Now, I'm a 39-year-old powerlifting coach, soon to be 40.

We're an endangered species.

I left warmup rooms surrounded by young and enthusiastic 22-year-old coaches, and my thoughts were, I need to get better at running a warmup room, I have to get faster and more efficient, and I need to improve my preparation.

Local meets are relaxed and I've dialed down my attention to detail over the years, so as to not stress out my lifters. But Nationals was an eye-opener, and I learned a lot from these young coaches.

My notes included...

..I need to be faster and more efficient in warmups. Beware of men's masters sessions, where there's a dearth of other coaches; you will have to HUSTLE, coach Kyle.

..I need to keep all possibilities in my brain. Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse, every scenario. In one critical moment I missed a jury request that could have dramatically improved a lifter's day. I had a time-out on a deadlift opener. In other sports, we called these "unforced errors."

..I need to clone myself. Seriously. Coaching non-stop. Barely time for remote check-ins. Cutting into sleep hours to get work done...mostly down to 4-6 hours per night. I'm too old to be so short on sleep.

..I was happy with our success rate, but it could have been better. We had a couple of bad peaks that should have been better. We chased on a couple of attempts that I should have conceded on and adjusted down. There are easy fixes here to get into a 8/9 average range. Sometimes the coach just needs to call better numbers.

Even at 39, I always feel like there's so much room to keep improving at this.

WELCOME to all our new members from May! 🎉 It's been the busiest month for onboarding in a long time, but also super fulfilling!

In the future, my enrollment will be capped for in-person coaching.

I'll be adding online coaching spots as space becomes available.

As coach, I don't want "space to become available" because, duh, it means someone canceled, which is always a sad thing.

I have been asked about our retention rate and I imagine our average is currently at 2.5-3 years. It's potentially actually longer than that for group training.

As always, if you want to talk to me about coaching, you want to schedule a consultation over at:

From there I will give you a timeline for starting!
