Starts up May 9th!
Urban Underdog’s strategy and approach towards strengthening and building mathematical, science, and reading skills by taking a more holistic approach than what tutoring has proven to be. We do not instruct specific content. We believe strongly in procedural fluency.
👨🏾🎨🙏🏾
Procedural fluency is more than memorizing facts or procedures, and it is more than understanding and being able to use one procedure for a given situation. Procedural fluency builds on a foundation of conceptual understanding, strategic reasoning, and problem solving (NGA Center & CCSSO, 2010; NCTM, 2000, 2014). Research suggests that once students have memorized and practiced procedures that they do not understand, they have less motivation to understand their meaning or the reasoning behind them (Hiebert, 1999). Therefore, the development of students' conceptual understanding of procedures should precede and coincide with instruction on procedures. Although conceptual knowledge is an essential foundation, procedural knowledge is important in its own right. All students need to have a deep and flexible knowledge of a variety of procedures, along with an ability to make critical judgments about which procedures or strategies are appropriate for use in particular situations (NRC, 2001, 2005, 2012; Star, 2005).

We would like to show love and appreciation for this young man right here. Dougie has grown exponentially in our program and this year he turned around a tough semester to finish ahead of the game.
He capped off a semester in which he went from a D to a B+ in math as well as improving all other subjects with an overall B average finish. This semester as filled with adversity and he persevered like the true champion that he is ending with his first band performance last night. What a fantastic young man.

Teachers agreed that deep conceptual learning involves:
* Being able to transfer learning from one subject or lesson to another
* Learning through trial and error
* Thinking through a process to problem solve, as opposed to simply applying procedures
* Being able to explain the thinking that goes into the solution
At , deep conceptual learning is as common a topic of conversation as it is in schools. While basic procedural skills like counting and computation are critical, they are just the tip of the iceberg and we intend to show you better than we can tell you 🦾📖🏁

REMINDER - Real Talk About Race Sangha Tonight at 8p ET with Reggie Hubbard]
This meditation offering is an attempt to interrupt that cycle for those who want to seek to move ahead individually and collectively.
If you want to be in virtual community to process the whiplash of the Rittenhouse verdict, McAdams guilty verdict for murdering Ahmaud Arbery all right before Thanksgiving (rather than speeding onto the next thing and missing an opportunity to process, gain wisdom and take wise action going forward), then come through next Monday evening at 8p ET.

To be the solution you must first identify the problem and the risks associated with it.
🤚🏿Individual and Family Risk Factors ✊🏿

💠Children and youth who don’t feel close to their parents/caregivers and feel like they can’t talk to them about their feelings
💠Youth who start dating early or engaging in sexual activity early
💠Children and youth with few or no friends or or with friends who engage in aggressive or delinquent behavior

The adults in our program serve as immediate and often times the only buffers many of these young people have between them and the they face daily.
