You know all of those 1,200 calorie diets that have you miserable? They’re also starving your body of all that it needs. The word “calorie” isn’t a bad word—calories are just units of energy. It’s like watts or joules. Your body needs calories in order to power itself to do all of the chemical processes in your body (“metabolism”). All of these super low calorie diets that are just out there aren’t taking in to account your current size or mass, nor are they taking into account your activity level. On a day when I teach my normal Bootcamp schedule, between the hours of 5 and 1030am, I’ve burned nearly 1,800 calories. If I were consuming only 1,200 calories per day then I’d already be upside down. “But don’t I need a calorie deficit if I want to lose weight?!” Yes, you do, but that deficit doesn’t need to be more than 200-300 calories per day. That means that you only need to burn approximately a yogurt’s worth of calories more than you consume each day. You’re burning calories even if you just sit on the couch all day—calories fuel blinking, breathing, digesting, etc. A person who is 5’6” and weighing 175 pounds needs at least 1,200 calories just to fuel metabolism (all those body processes) each day. When you ask that body to then expend more calories brushing teeth, walking to the mailbox, exercising, etc., your body needs to have fuel from which to pull. If you drastically under-eat then the body will fuel itself with muscle and fat (eating itself). Sure, you may lose a little weight, but it won’t be the kind you want! Have you plateaued? Maybe it’s because you’re eating too LITTLE. When you under-eat, your body also stores as fat what little fuel you DO consume — like a bear getting ready to hibernate. Sounds radical, I know, but it’s not. Would you like a personal nutrition assessment? I’m a Fitness Nutrition Specialist (ACE). Shoot me a message!

(This photo is a great example of a time when, had I not been properly fueled, I’d never have made it through teaching my BODYCOMBAT class. 😎)

12.19.2021 -- Full Body Strength (56 mins)

Here's a full-body strength workout that I just taught at the gym, and it's HARD if you pick the right weights. Don't have a bar and plates? No worries, dumbbells or bands will work too! No bench? Lay on the floor!

12.19.2021 Full Body Strength (56 mins) https://youtu.be/4ZQVTH9WcVo

PS Remember that I have many more free workouts than I post here. If anyone wants to be added to the list for these workouts, they can fill out the form located here: https://forms.gle/ihqHrEgD83BoiCJh7.

The start…rain and cold and wind.

Middle…running on the docks at Lake Erie.

Finish…sweating but cold, soaked from rain and puddles.

America’s Turkey Trot 5K completed. I haven’t run since before I was pregnant, so let’s call it 3 years ago. Back then I was running 10 minute miles. Today I finished with a 12 minute pace. Little bit of run, walk, run, but I’m happy we did it.

“I don’t like this format, but I come anyway because YOU are the best instructor.” ⬅️ A member said this to me today after taking 30 minutes of strength and 30 minutes of BODYCOMBAT. She doesn’t love BC. In fact, she hates it (her words), so I asked her why she comes back every Saturday. It’s not that I didn’t want her to show up, but obviously I want her to love what she’s doing. She told me that it’s just hard for her to feel coordinated, BUT that the format makes her fee both empowered and a little bit bad ass (again, her words). She then went on to tell me how she stays for that half because of ME. Remember my post on Thursday about how you have to give the sub a chance? I am SUBBING this class long term. It was a rough go when I first started it. They loved Mandy, and I wasn’t her. So to hear this now…well…I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have a few tears in my eyes. ❤️ Give people positive feedback. It makes such a difference!

Life comes full circle when you least expect it.

Today I gave out advice that Stephanie and Anne once have to me. It felt so good to be on the other side, to be able to reassure someone else.

Cut everyone some slack.

Everyone has a “Day 1”, and this was mine back when I needed to lose 100 pounds. This was before fitness was my profession, before I had a “following” and before it was “trendy” to share such things. Times have changed a lot since 2012, but that doesn’t mean I take a single thing for granted. As I get ready for bed tonight i am grateful that I got to teach two fitness classes today and will teach two more tomorrow, playing a small role in someone ELSE’S Day 1.

10.27.21 -- Full Body Strength (45 mins)

I taught a 45-minute strength format today, and I thought you might like to try it. Tag me or comment below if you give It a whirl. You'll need heavy, moderate and light weights. You can use a barbell with plates or dumbbells. If you plan to use a bar and plates, please note that you'll also need a single heavy plate or dumbbell (you need to be able to do single-arm rows) and a set of light plates or dumbbells for shoulder work.

Can't wait to see you crush It!

Every time someone asks me to add another class to the schedule because I’m “such a wonderful and fun instructor”, this is what I see in my head. The only day I don’t teach is Friday. 😬 I’m supporting three area YMCAs. This is just my October schedule. I love my job tremendously, but no, I won’t be adding any more new, permanent classes any time soon. 🤣 (I also film content for my free class library every week.)

And the “mom lunch” train rolls on. This salad is spicy—featuring a vegan/regular mayo-based dressing with lemon juice, salt, pepper and fresh garlic plus a little vegan/regular sour cream. Romaine, carrots, orange pepper, cucumber, chickpeas, white cheddar, raspberries and blueberries. Oh, and a touch of hot sauce never hurt anyone! 😎 Paired it with a Granny Smith and a kid cup of mangoes.

This was my lunch today after I ran home from class. The babies had been asleep for an hour, and I knew I only had a handful of minutes to make and then devour my lunch if I also wanted some time to sit on my butt before they woke up from naps. Quickest salad with romaine, carrots, orange peppers, green onions, chickpeas and my favorite lemon dressing. Paired that with basically every fruit we had in the house. 🤣

This was my morning post in my gym’s group exercise page right after teaching my cycling class today. I used to tell people that I HATED cycling. In reality I’d just had a bad experience, which was the combination of not asking for help setting up my bike, not listening to form cues (heels push down!), and also having an instructor who barely talked about technique (your knees should never hurt in a cycling class). I wouldn’t attend classes and certainly had no interest in becoming a cycle instructor. But then my old gym was in desperate need of more cycle subs, and I needed those continuing education credits for my personal training certification. I decided to do the training and figured I’d never really use it. Boy was i wrong. That one training, followed by a second cycling certification later, helped correct all of my issues with the bike. Days like today, where I get to be the one to wipe away people’s bad experience or misconceptions about what cycling is and can be are my favorite. So, maybe you’ll give MY class a shot and change YOUR view of the bike too.
