What are we looking for?
We’re looking for 12–15 committed players to form a full team. You only need 9 ballists to play a game, but a well-rounded club also includes umpires, scorekeepers, and sometimes costumed sideline interpreters who engage with the crowd.

How often will we play?

To maintain VBBA membership, clubs must play at least 6 matches per year against other VBBA teams. Most clubs play 10–20 games, but some go all in with 60+ matches. Travel is part of the fun—you’ll meet great folks and explore new places. If you want clubs to visit your town, be ready to hit the road and return the favor!

⚾ Key 1860s Baseball Rules & Customs

- Pitching Style: Underhand only—no throwing or snapping the wrist. Pitcher stood 45 feet from home.
- Fair vs. Foul Balls: A ball was fair if it first touched ground or was caught in front of the lines from home to first or third base.
- No Gloves: Players fielded barehanded—gloves weren’t used yet.
- One Bounce Rule: Catching a ball on one bounce could still count as an out.
- Winning the Ball: Victorious team kept the game ball as a trophy.
- Gentlemanly Conduct: Players were expected to act with decorum; arguing with the umpire was discouraged.
- League Culture: The game was seen as a gentleman’s sport, emphasizing honor and sportsmanship.
