'In the dream, Jimmy Doyle was in the ring with me. I hit him a few good punches and he was on his back, his blank eyes staring up at me, and I was staring down at him, not knowing what to do, and the referee was moving in to count to ten and Doyle still wasn't moving a muscle and in the crowd I could hear people yelling, 'He's dead, he's dead,' and I didn't know what to do. Then I woke up.

I tried to get back to sleep, tried to continue the dream so Doyle would be all right, but I couldn't close my eyes. In the morning, when I got up, I told George Gainford about the dream. But George. didn't want to hear about it. 'Forget it, Robinson,' he said. 'That's a dream, that's all. Don't have it on your mind. Nothing's gonna happen.'

That's not the way I was thinking. I considered the dream a warning. At the weigh-in, I quietly told Larry Atkins, the promoter about it. 'I don't want to fight Doyle,' I told Atkins. 'I don't want anything to happen.'

'Don't be ridiculous,' he said. 'Dreams don't come true. If they did, I'd be a millionaire.'

'Damn it, Larry,' I said. 'I'm going to tell the commission that I'm not fighting.'

'Are you crazy?' he said. 'You've already postponed this fight twice. You're not going to say a word. And if I ever asked the commission to put off the fight, they'd think I was crazy.'

As much as I didn't want to go through with the fight, I decided to do it after being persuaded by a priest whose name I've forgotten and who was summoned by the commission.

That night, when the bell rang at the Cleveland Arena, I hadn't forgotten about the dream, but it wasn't on my mind as much. Doyle kept coming at me. I was winning most of the rounds, but none of them were easy because he knew how to fight and he had guts. In the sixth round and in the seventh, his left hook had me backing up. In the eighth round, I saw the opening I had been waiting for, and I went for it. I threw a double right hand, first into his belly, then to his head. He sagged a little but he kept coming at me, and he started to throw a right hand when I beat him to the punch with a good left hook to the jaw. Lewis Burton of the Journal-American later wrote, 'Doyle fell back rigidly, pivoting on his heels as if they were hinged to the canvas. He cracked against the floor in three parts, his seat, his shoulders, and finally, like the snapping end of a whip, the back of his head.' I stood over him, transfixed, seeing my dream come true, horribly true.'
