Congratulations to my good friends Amelia Mau, Mckenzie Greenblatt, and my partner Stephen Gee for becoming PADI Open Water Scuba Divers this past weekend! At long last, you are worthy of joining me on vacation. Yes, that includes you Stephen (about time).

I am so impressed with each of your achievements. Amelia, you have so much courage and determination. Kenzie, you are just game to try anything and are one independent woman! Stephen, you are the best listener I know, and really do pay attention to the smallest details, plus you stay kind and calm no matter the situation. I love how diving shines on a spotlight on each of your strengths. Thank you for sharing this experience with me.

While you are all “rock star divers” who kick up less silt than Andrew Day, that's no surprise, because you had some of the best diving professionals at your disposal. Namely, a Mister Joe Glausi, who helped out at every stage of the course, and who went the extra mile in so many ways (I daren’t say how, lest anyone try to steal him). I know our course would not have been half as much fun without you, Joe.

A huge thank you also to Danica and Alex for catching Stephen up on some of his confined water dives. Because of you two, we had the extra time to get him checked out in a drysuit.

Furthermore, congrats to Alex, who used this catch-up time to finish her Divemaster course; and to Danica for being her supportive and fun instructor. It is inspiring, empowering, and important to have women join the professional ranks of diving. You bring empathy, modesty, fun, and compassion to the sport, and you encourage other women to try it too.

All those non-course-taking tagalongs came in pretty handy as well. Andrew Greenblatt, you make for a swell picker-upper of gifts for me (naturally, you’re the best), great shore support with offers of delivering coffee and food, and of course a mean tidy-upper after our Airbnb morning rush. Siera Kaup and Andrew Day, thanks for running out to get the hungry divers some of the best Thai food in Oregon.

FINALLY, thank you to Eugene Skin Divers Supply and Ron for getting everyone kitted out with exactly the right gear. Everything was a breeze, including the chilly Saturday air and the on-and-off rain fearlessly combated by Joe and his secret dive site setup elements.

Amelia, these green lake pictures are mostly for you. Now you get to be a part of the epic tradition of divers certified at Woahink Lake. Yay!

Huge congratulations to Siera and Katie for completing their PADI Rescue Diver course this weekend at Woahink! Saturday was kind to us with plenty of sun, and Sunday threw in some of our good old PNW conditions. Also, thank you to Andrew Day for being every kind of diver possible (unresponsive, tired, panicked, decoy). Danica and I could not have asked for more fun students or for a better weekend!

That green-yellow feeling when you go straight from Open Water to PADI Enriched Air Nitrox certified...congrats to Colton for getting EANx certified tonight, only a few days after getting his Open Water Scuba cert too! We are all about overachieving here...

Congratulations to Josi, Coleton and Coley, our newest Open Water Scuba Divers! We enjoyed excellent visibility in both Blue Lake Reservoir and Woahink Lake and really honed in on buoyancy. This class was an absolute pleasure to teach! Thank you also to Rogelio Cassol, Andrew Day and Joe Glausi for all the help. Also to Danica Shepherd and Alex Brereton. Would not have been half as much fun without you guys.

Congratulations to Siera Kaup and Kala Kephart for achieving a new scuba power status: Advanced Open Water. Thanks to Andrew Day for Divemastering, and Eugene Skin Divers Supply for equipment and support. 🐙

About Scuba Canz (The H2O Version)

In 2016 I made the plunge and signed up for my first scuba diving class. While I’ve always been a child of the water, I never could have imagined that soon I’d be a hopelessly obsessed scuba diver.

My first open water class was both a terrifying and exhilarating experience. A week later I was diving a new site with a new friend, renting my first set of gear, and having my first ever scuba photos taken. From this point on, everything changed. I promptly returned to the dive shop and booked myself in for the next class, Advanced Open Water. But, why stop there? I was told that I could do the class in a drysuit if I did a drysuit checkout and that I could add a Night Specialty. 3 days and 9 dives. I was psyched.

Within a month I was back in the water for my Advanced class, those mixed emotions of awe, terror, and exhilaration all bubbling together. Scuba diving was an entry into a new world. It took away the past, made me stop worrying about the future, and grounded me wholly in the present. There was simply nothing like it.

My instructor at the time, could see I was hooked and he said, “This is what us instructors live for, someone like you for whom diving changes everything.”
