Honey Hill Homestead

Comments

Well due to health issues and life changes, I have moved into a full time farmer/dad/homeschoolers position. My wife is amazing and has begun a new position and is now our primary breadwinner. While I go through medical treatment and recovery, I am focusing more of energies to our homestead and children. AND HOLY WOW CAN THIS BE HARDER. I truly have respect for those stay at home parents who manage their homes and homeschool. It is tougher than you think. Trying to find time to manage the homestead is daunting. Join my journey and gives comments and advice. I appreciate any help I can get.
They're getting big!
So we here on the homestead are taking up a new hobby, blacksmithing. It's a fun hobby, and allows us to be a bit more self sufficient. In gathering materials for the forge, I have come across a 13 pound maul(?). Also picked up some smaller brake drums. Here's some pics, and I will post more as things come together.
Have not gotten to do much around the homestead due to weather.
Lebanon Missouri is a mess right now!
Projects of the day:

1. Finish rescuing some cat iron we scored.
2. New cabin shells due to arrive!
Little Miss decided to make a salad treat for the chickens!
All these chickens!
How does your garden grow?
Check out my friends at Magic of the Bear!

We are a small family homestead located in the Missouri Ozarks. After moving from Oregon we are working to become a self sustaining homestead in southern Missouri.

We are building or own home, raise rabbits, chickens, and children! We homeschool our seven children.

Rosemary-Honey Roast Chicken | Paleo Leap 06/23/2017

Rosemary-Honey Roast Chicken | Paleo Leap

Tonight's main course for our Super Budget Meal Month, Rosemary-Honey Roast Chicken

Side dish: Spicy Honey Roasted Carrots (https://paleoleap.com/spicy-honey-roasted-carrots/)

This is a great combination if you're mix the side with the onion and carrot stuffing on the plate.

PREP TIP: Separate the skin from the bird, on both sides, without removing it or tearing it creating pockets. Place your seasoning/coating/marinade into the pocket as well as outside the skin and massage it in. This allows the flavor to really sink into the meat instead of just the skin (which comes out nice and crispy). So that those that don't like the skin can remove it and still get all the yummy flavor!

Rosemary-Honey Roast Chicken | Paleo Leap Dinner is headed your way, stuffed with vegetables and fresh herbs, and finished off with a honey-balsamic sauce.

Teaching | MDC Discover Nature

Yesterday we got our official DNS curriculum books! We're super excited to incorporate this fun year round study into our educational studies. This curriculum is absolutely free to Missouri educators. If you're not from Missouri I highly recommend checking with your Conservation Department to see if they have a similar program (and if they don't you can suggest it!)

The Pre-K curriculum is available for download free!

Homestead Kitties!
Ember and Sensha.
Ember is the calico tiger, she is a sweet, fearless, playful girl. Sensha is a sweet little basement kitty that some jerkface threw out a car window. She wouldn't let me get a picture of her poor chin but she has some swelling to her lower jaw.

We had a guest this morning!

While The Boy and Oobie were walking the dogs this morning at 7:39. The Boy met a young Red Tail Hawk limping down the road.

He brought it home.

We made some calls, but there is no place in Missouri for a raptor other than the zoo. We called them, left a message.

Meanwhile Rausk (our guest) took a nap on his "perch" occasionally taking time to study us and male little chirpy noises.

We get called back, no openings. We're told the best we can do is give it a safe place to chill until he's ready to leave.

So about 11am rolls around and Rausk sort of hop - flies at the window. He gets a little agitated until he finds The Boy.

The Boy picks him up, he calms down. We take him outside, he hop/jumps to the ground and lays there funny. The Boy set him on his feet and off he went...

The Boy is now interested in Falconry!

Homestead/Homeschool update. We are working on our blog! Hopefully we will be able to start publishing it soon. In the meantime we are hard at work building our cabin, gardens, etc..

Pictured here is the awesome vest I made being modeled by Karen Corbin. Please feel free to shoot me a message if you're interested in getting one for yourself!

Homeschool Update: We are on the hunt for Heathen resources for more than just preschoolers! With our age ranges from 3-17 is hard to find things to include in Honey Hill Homeschool! Got any suggestions? Let us know...
