Last week, we welcomed our Soke, Risho Hajime Hayabuchi for his first visit. It was a great success, and we look forward to welcoming him again next year! Until then... Work hard, stay humble. See you in class.

Now that we have returned from the land of the Rising Sun, we're all back at work training hard.

No harm in asking a Tengu for help...

See you in class.

It's been cold and snowy this past weekend, with temperatures down to -15 F (-26 C). When practicing in a dojo with tabi, we don't need to consider the difficult weather we may need to fight in (or even just survive).

There are many kinds of Japanese footwear used in the premodern era. Tabi, zori, and geta -- to name a few. Sometimes, there would be covers for toes that could be lined with fur and lacquered for waterproofing. Geta may be used to raise feet above the snow, water, and ice.

But there's also fukagutsu (深履)- deep boots and yukigetsu (深沓) - snow boots. Both made from woven straw.

Merry Christmas to all our students, family, and friends from all of us here at Senshin Dojo!

Kamon: Japanese Family Heraldry 21/12/2023

Let's talk about kamon. Identifying symbols not unlike that of heraldry. Identifiers for troop positions, clothing, and originally ox carts.

One of my favorites is the Rokumonsen 六文銭 (six coins) belonging to the Sanada Clan. Easy to identify and explain, but associated also with the common cost to pass the Sanzu River (analgous to the River Styx).
Even the modern Mitsubishi logo is derived from the Mitsuhosokashiwa (three water chestnuts) of the Tosa Yamauchi clan.

The mon for our school is called, kumika maruni igeta. Attempting to put this one through Googooru Sensei will be a little difficult.

組み替 (Kumika) - To Rearrange or Recombine
丸 (Maru) - In a Circle
井桁 (Igeta) - Well Cover of wooden beams

A well cover, in a circle arranged.
See you in class.
