It’s really valuable to have elders in our community and in all spaces.
❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
A recent submission to Ask Jake, an LGBTQ advice column written by therapist Jake Myers, is pointing out something many q***r elders have felt but do not always say out loud: they helped build this community, and now some of them feel invisible inside it.
A 75-year-old le***an wrote to Jake, sharing an experience at a Pride planning meeting that left her shaken. She said a younger gay man snapped at her, rolled his eyes when she spoke, called her “out of touch” and “silly,” and talked over her in front of the room.
What impacted her the most was not only his behavior, but the feeling behind it. She wondered if he saw her as an old relic with white hair and outdated ideas instead of an equal member of the committee, or even THE community.
Then she explained in her letter the part he did not know.
During the AIDS crisis, she spent years caring for dying gay men. She sat beside hospital beds. She brought groceries to friends who were sick. She marched in the streets, went to funerals, and watched an entire generation disappear while much of the world looked away. In fact, most ignored the dying gay community. Some out of fear, most out of spite.
Her letter was signed, “Still Here, Still Queer.”
That is the story. Not just one rude exchange at one Pride meeting, but the larger ache underneath it. A lot of younger LGBTQ people inherited rooms they did not have to fight their way into. That is a gift. But it also means some of the people who made those rooms possible are still sitting there, sometimes being treated like they are in the way.
Le****ns were not bystanders during the AIDS crisis. Many became caregivers, organizers, advocates, blood donors, fundraisers, nurses, and chosen family for gay men who had been abandoned by families, churches, hospitals, politicians, and neighbors. They showed up because people were dying, and because community was not supposed to be theoretical.
History and times does not make every older q***r person automatically right. It does not mean younger people cannot disagree, challenge, or push the conversation forward. But it should make us more careful about how we speak to people whose lives carry stories we may not know.
The woman who wrote to Ask Jake was not asking to be worshipped. She was asking to be seen.
She is still here. She is still q***r. And she should not have to prove that she belongs in the community she helped keep alive.

Text reads:
June is CAH (Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia) Awareness Month and PRIIDE MONTH.
I exist I am Real!
Most CAH Organizations say 46XX can't be a man.
Most CAH Organizations do not call this "intersex" when it is.
Most CAH Organizations are Trans or interphobic.
I am a GAY, 46XX INTERSEX MAN. My intersex variation is CAH and PCOS.
RESPECT MY EXISTENCE Or EXPECT MY RESISTANCE!
