Have you heard of converted minivan camping? Many of us already have minivans that can used as 1-2 person minicampers and still be used as a passenger van as desired. It takes us as little as 45 minutes to convert our minimal MiniCamper back to a passenger minivan and be ready to take our grandkids to school.

These pictures are our from the private group, “MiniVan Conversions to MiniCampers Group” we created and had grown to 7.8k members as of Fentuary, 2026. We do not sleep on the ground and rarely get a motel room, but enjoy our own bed every night. Even eating in restaurants is rare when we are vacationing, or just taking a weekend excursion.

These pictures are shared by Bob and me as members and creators of the “MiniVan Conversions to MiniCampers Group”. These are
places we have camped in our converted minivan camper, which is often augmented by a tent to extend the daytime living quarters. Although we do camp in state parks and private campgrounds, we prefer dispersed camping, also known as boondocking. Dispersed camping can be in designated USFS (U.S. Forest Service), and BLM (Bureau of Land Management) is camping in remote areas with no amenities such as water and electricity, and is free. COE (Corp of Enginers) has fabulous campgrounds on lakes with inexpensive fees, but dont not allow dispersed camping. Be aware yhr dispersed campimg requires more preparation than camping in campgrounds, but many MiniVan Life fans prefer it. As you will notice, we often use a tent as an extrnded living area.

A MiniVan Conversions To MiniCampers FaceBook Group member tests her vision of her DIY minivan conversion with a 3D view of it.

Here’s a work-in-process by a member of the private FaceBook group, MiniVan Conversions to MiniCampers. Most members do their own conversions, many of which are minimal nobuilds. This member is taking it a step further, even creating 3D pictures to be sure her plan is creatimg a workable build, and it is the build she wants.

She says,

“Still a long way to go, but I couldn’t resist seeing how the layout I envisioned feels in 3D. Since I already own the 2019 Grand Caravan that I use for work, I splurged on the components, $600. This does not include the fridge, solar, portable AC, window shades, linens, curtains, flooring and supplies.”

Each picture has an explanatory comment. As she said, she has a long way to go, but this 3D portfolio shows she has a solid vision and a plan to get it accomplished.

Camping without electrical hookups allows us to enjoy more isolated camping with nature, and saves us a lot of money to boot. See more travel photos inMiniVan MiniCampers Travel Photos.

Have you heard is dispersed camping and boondocking, and wondered what they are. Dispersed camping and Boondocking both describe camping in designated USFS (U.S. Forest Service) remote areas with no amenities. Boondocking also includes camping in other remote areasthat are legal but not specifically designated.
