Sideline chat from today’s Sunday afternoon game:
I subbed a kid out just to rotate players in. As he came off, he started ripping himself, saying he got subbed for his “absolutely terrible winger play.”
I told him, “No, I just need to get everyone in the game.” But he kept being hard on himself, so I finally said, “Kid, you’ve got enough people being tough on you out here — you’ve gotta be good to yourself. Be your biggest fan in the world, because nobody else will.”
He paused and said, “That’s true. My stepdad’s been especially hard on me since I turned 12. I mean, he did take us in when my mom and I were homeless.” Then he looked at me and said, “You’re right, Coach,” and gave me a hug.
Moments like that remind you — coaching goes way beyond the game.

Update... Different coaches will see players in completely different ways. The one who pulls the player after every mistake is developing a culture of fearfulness - the next coach sees the value of effort and attitude and builds a culture of fearlessness. Not sure I did a good job of describing that.

Sometimes we’re so caught up in wins or loses we miss the good stuff. Talked to a coach having a tough season today after his game, he’s ready to hang it up after many years. I asked his son standing there “do you like having your dad as coach?” He said “yes” excitedly and shook his head. Coach dad wasn’t interested. One day it ends and you can’t get it back.
Let’s normalize kids training at home on their own before paying someone else to have them do the same drills.
Theirs millions of videos of solo skills and practice sessions yet parents willingly shell out big bucks for trainers to run the same drills.
My favorite local trainer stresses that if your player isn’t doing work at home on their own he doesn’t want them to waste your money.
