True or False? Does Muscle weigh more than Fat? Good question.
While it is true that a pound of fat on the scale weighs the same as a pound of muscle on the scale, it's the difference in density and the ability of each in how they burn calories that matters. For each pound of muscle you have you will burn approx 6-10 calories per day. For each pound of fat, you will only burn approx 2-3 calories per day.
To further expound on that, as people age they complain that they don't burn as many calories as they used to and their metabolism has slowed. That is so true. One of the possibilities is that because as we age we lose lean mass. Say at 30 years old you weighed 130lb and were only 20% body fat. Now you are 60 years old and still weigh 130lb but due to muscle loss, you are now 30% body fat. Your metabolism has probably slowed because now you have more fat burning less calories per day. This is why it is so important for older people to incorporate weight/strength training into their exercise regimes.
One last thing to consider... would you rather be 120lbs and 30% body fat percentage? Or would you rather be 135lbs with only 18% body fat percentage? The scale doesn't always show fit.
