FRC (mobility specialist) + Kinstretch Instructor

The IG world needs to meet Ms. Ruth! Her granddaughter gifted her mobility sessions and she inspired me within one minute of meeting her. Ruth is 92 years old and wants to put in the work to keep moving well after 2 knee replacements. She prefers to do most of our hour long sessions on her feet because she feels lazy when she sits.

Here is the real life example what I sometimes say when I teach a group class…. At the end of the day, the goal is to be the great grandma or grandpa that can pick your own keys up when they drop or be able to get off the floor on your own, and, to not be hurting doing daily life things!

She enjoys working out doing her own laundry, own cooking and own cleaning. The only thing I think she doesn’t do is drive (but between you and me I think that’s because she doesn’t like driving her daughters stick shift 😉). She Ubers back and forth twice a week. What a lovely lady ❤️

She has so much strength! I hope Ruth inspires you to move today and every day!

TOMORROW NIGHT!!!

Come WD-40 your shoulder joint!

This workshop is perfect for people who deal with shoulder “issues” or for someone that just wants healthy shoulders in general so they can mitigate injury and pain. See description 👇🏼

It is very common for a client to not have enough flexibility in their shoulders so they get to a place they feel "stuck", and then begin to recruit their spine to help them out. It is also common for a client to never train their scapula, but it is too important of a joint in relation to the shoulder to be forgotten. Come discover your shoulders true range of motion and become more body aware of your upper body and what is actually happening as you participate in your fitness class, or sport, or every day life. We will work to break through range of motion limitations and work on strengthening the shoulder.

Hips Like Butter Workshop happening this Wednesday at 7pm!

We often hear from clients, "my hips feel tight". It is common to feel this way because we form habits from our daily movement patterns. When we don't train our hips in their full range of motion, we start recruiting other joints to make up for the loss of flexibility. This workshop will lead you through the proper way to train your hips to keep them functioning as healthy as possible. You will leave feeling stretched and strong. You can take what you learn from this workshop and continue these movements at home to begin aging and feeling better. When you put in the effort, the results are worth it!

Mobility with Mel beach edition …

I took a few minutes on this particular morning to train my hips in INTERNAL rotation.

You may think 💭 that’s weird, who does this?

I do 🙋🏼‍♀️

In my experience, there has been way more focus on passive stretching in external rotation (for ex. Squat with toes out, knees back/figure 4/pigeon/butterfly/happy baby… the list goes on) but little to no focus on hip internal rotation.

I see a lot of coaches or trainers asking their clients to do any stretch listed above and that is assumed to be the end all be all of this ‘tight hip syndrome’ that is all too common. Hip ER is just one part of how your hip functions. If we only stretch and strength train like this, we don’t have a functional hip.

Hip IR is one example of what we cover in classes and sessions and in my barre and sculpt classes. Heathy hip function is moving, stretching and strengthening your hip in all directions.

For all my beach people reading this… sound is on! Listen to those glorious waves. Spring is coming 🙌🏼

Kinstretch is back this week!

When: Thursday’s 1:15pm
Where: Resilient Health and Performance (Brentwood, TN)

Kinstretch is flexibility training and strength training

If you have flexibility without strength, you do not have control of your body

If you have strength without flexibility, you can not access the range of motion needed to optimally move

This class helps you move where you can’t move and helps strengthen your range of motion

Both are essential to joint health

Come join me each week! It is a small investment resulting in big benefits!

Buttery shoulders 🧈

Eventually there is a moment where the consistency of showing up and putting in the hard work starts to pay off (in big ways)! Your crappy shoulder becomes a better quality shoulder. You begin to gain the flexibility and strength to be able to move your shoulder how it’s intended to move. You begin to have more control over your movement. This is functional mobility and it is worth the investment.

As an instructor, hearing from your students that they feel a difference and feel better as they go through life is the best part of my day.

is for everyone! You are not trying to look like me or the person next to you. You get to be honest with your body and about your ability to move each individual joint. Everyone has work to do so let’s get to it.

Come join me this Thursday at 1:15pm!

There is so much demand on ankles. We run, we walk, we jump, we hop, we squat. But have you ever trained your ankles??? For me personally, the answer would be “no” until this past year with my mobility work. The majority of my injuries have to do with ankle stuff but I never prioritized helping them function in a better way. You don’t know what you don’t know. Once you do know, you have to do something about it!

Here is a clip of us working on ankle control in ankle inversion, eversion and dorsiflexion. It’s harder than it looks!

is this Thursday 1:15pm. Come join me!

We worked close to our end range today as we attempted to clear the block. By doing this and using tension in our body, we are actively training our hip. Who wants a sloppy hip?! No thanks. I want to own my range of motion in all joints.

The challenge here is to stay in the same angle without calling on other joints to help lift the leg.

It’s all hip flexion and it gets crampy. A little neurological confusion is a good thing! We are communicating with our internal environment and gaining control of our body 👊🏼

Side note: spell check told me “crampy” is not even a word ,but, you will be happy to know it of in fact a valid scrabble word 🤷🏼‍♀️😆

If you are human, you need to train your joints!

There are so many parts that go untrained in traditional methods. People experience discomfort, pain and injury that brings them to a doctor with the attempt to feel better. In many cases, relief is found to wind up back where you started days, weeks or months later. Many times you aren’t getting to the root of the issue.

It is more than just pain relief.

and his team use an evidence based system to get to the root of your individualized needs.

Kinstretch is a part of this system in a group setting that works to create body control. This leads to improved body awareness, range of motion, strength and overall joint health.

Class is on Thursdays at 1:15pm!
