🧼Best kept secret about bicycle maintenance🔧

Measure your chain📏. Chain manufacturers say you should get 1000-3000 miles out of a chain, depending on riding conditions and how you maintain your bike.

As your chain wears, it lengthens. We use a chain checker tool to gauge how much your chain has lengthened(pictured). When your chain reaches 0.5% it’s time for a new chain. At 0.75% the wear has started to extend to other parts and repairs can get costly. (The bike pictured needed $250 of parts instead of a $20 chain)

If you haven’t checked your chain recently, stop by the shop. We don’t charge to measure your chain, and we can do it immediately.

🚴🏻‍♂️Not all shift cables are made the same🔧

At Wheel Base we stock all sorts of different shift cables. The three we use the most are pictured:

Silver🪙: Just the standard steel cable
Green💚: Shimano’s OptiSlick cable
Brown🐻: Shimano’s Polymer cable

Most cables are made of 19 stainless steel strands twisted together. Many companies offer upgraded cables that have special coatings that helps to reduce friction and increase corrosion resistance .

The OptiSlick cables coating is applied using an electrostatic process to smooth out the surface of the cable.

The Polymer coated (Dura Ace) cables have, if looked at under a microscope, small ridges that significantly cut down surface friction and hold lubricants longer to achieve noticeably smoother shifts.

Most modern bikes have full length housing from shifters to derailleurs, and that’s great for protecting your cable but it increases friction and can have a negative effect on your shifting.

So if you can’t seem to get your shifting dialed in like it used to be, consider a new cable or an upgrade.
