Christmas Tree Lane will open for our 103rd year being in early December (date will be finalized after meeting with law enforcement) and run through Christmas night Dec. 25th. Driving down The Lane has been a part of our community for over a century and The Fig Garden Homeowners Association will continue to ensure this community enjoyed treasure continues for generations. We will, however, be suspending our Walk Only Nights this year. The popularity and growth of these two Walk Nights has taken on a life of their own and has made it nearly impossible for our small group to put on in a way that ensures the safety of the 35,000 people who attend, and that of our neighborhood. Safety is our utmost concern and responsibility, and the size of these events has become too large to manage effectively. To provide and ensure a safe Walk Night experience, our small group would need to transfer these nights to a larger organization better suited to running this event. It is with very heavy hearts that weโve made this decision, but our commitment to our neighborhood and the greater Fresno community is unchanged as we work to fill the lane with lights and the spirit of Christmas for the 103rd time.

Our hearts are with everyone in Los Angeles area experiencing the devastation of the Eaton Fire and Palisades Fire. We are especially thinking of the residents of Altadena's Christmas Tree Lane. Altadena's Christmas Tree Lane served as the inspiration for the expansion of our very own Christmas Tree Lane from 10 families to the hundreds it is today. We are relieved to learn that although Altadena's Christmas Tree Lane sustained major damage, it largely survived the Eaton Fire. News coverage showed at least one home along the Lane in flames. Our thoughts are with the community of Altadena's Christmas Tree Lane as they rebuild.
Per the Fresno Historical Society, "In December 1920, Mrs. W.P. (Mae) Winning, wife of local dentist William Winning, lighted the cedar tree in front of her Van Ness Boulevard home in memory of her young son, William โBillyโ Hobart Winning who had tragically passed away at the age of 14 in an accident on the property. After admiring Mrs. Winningโs beautiful tree, members of the Fig Garden Womanโs Club and other residents of the boulevard took up the idea of outdoor decorations as a project and decided to light their trees.
By 1928, ten families participated. In 1930, Dr. W.W. Leslie saw outdoor decorations used in Altadena, Los Angeles County, as a community project. With some other members of the Fig Garden Menโs Club he came to the womanโs club and volunteered to help organize displays throughout the neighborhood. In December 1930, the first official Christmas Tree Lane opened with thirty lighted trees stretching one quarter of a mile along the boulevard. Each year, the number of lighted trees grew."

It opens to the public free of charge on Tuesday, December 3rd, 2024 and runs from 6:00 pm โ 10:00 pm. This will also be a walk night, so no vehicles will be allowed to drive on Van Ness Blvd. between Shields and Shaw Avenues.
A second walk night is scheduled for Wednesday, December 11th from 6:00 pm โ 10:00 pm. Again, no vehicles will be allowed. Fresno County Sheriffโs deputies and volunteers will be patrolling the area on foot, horseback and bicycle for security reasons and to assist the public.
