FUN FACT ! When I first started teaching tennis, I began like most coaches — working primarily with young beginner juniors and 2.5–3.0 adult players. I was fortunate to be hired by Andres Brandi to assist with junior and adult tennis at the University of Florida. At the time, it was Andy’s side business while he coached the Women’s Gators tennis team.

From the beginning, I was very goal-oriented and driven to work with higher-level players. I spent much of my free time traveling to clubs and academies, watching and learning from different teaching pros. My favorite was Rick Macci. I was fortunate enough to spend a week in South Florida while my brother played in a professional event, and between his matches I watched Rick in action every chance I got. I studied everything — his drills, teaching style, the way he communicated, and how he treated both his instructors and players.

I became obsessed with high-performance training, and over time I was fortunate to coach tournament-level players. One of them was Trey Johnson (pictured). I worked with Trey from the time he was 9 years old all the way through to college, where he eventually played for the Gators. Recently, he came by to visit while taking his son to a Morgan Wallen concert, which was a really special moment for me. I hadn’t seen Trey in years! Today , Trey is a family man and a doctor and still hits a good tennis ball!!

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that high-performance training can be extremely demanding, both physically and mentally. Over the past 15 years, my greatest passion has become doubles tennis. I’m completely obsessed with it. There are so many dynamics, strategies, and moving parts that make it incredibly fun to teach. These days, I even coach junior doubles a couple days a week! If you twist my arm I’ll even throw in some private lessons from time to time.
