THE HEART OF YOGA: LIVING THE 8 LIMBS
Month 1 — Yama
Week 1 — Ahimsa (Non-Harming)
Yoga is more than movement.
The ancient yogic path teaches us how to relate to ourselves, our communities, and the world around us with greater awareness and compassion.
This month Yoga Sankofa begins exploring the first limb of yoga: Yama — the ethical foundations of practice.
Our first principle is Ahimsa, often translated as non-harming.
Ahimsa reminds us that harm is not always physical.
Sometimes it looks like:
* speaking cruelly to ourselves,
* ignoring our body’s pain,
* pushing through exhaustion,
* reacting without breathing,
* or forgetting our shared humanity.
This week’s practice is simple:
✨ Speak to yourself gently.
✨ Take one deep breath before reacting.
✨ Modify without guilt.
✨ Rest when needed.
✨ Offer compassion where possible — including to yourself.
Journal Prompt:
Where am I being too hard on myself?
Yoga is not perfection.
Yoga is relationship.
Yoga is returning.
With love,
Makeda Meeks

🧘🏾♀️ FIVE HARD FACTS: WHY SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN NEED YOGA 🧘🏾♀️
1️⃣ Yoga improves focus and attention in the classroom.
Studies show movement + breathing exercises help children concentrate better and stay engaged longer. 📚
2️⃣ Yoga reduces stress and anxiety.
Children experience emotional overload too — yoga teaches calming tools they can actually use. 💛
3️⃣ Yoga helps with emotional regulation.
Kids learn how to pause, breathe, and respond instead of melting down or acting out. 🌈
4️⃣ Yoga improves balance, coordination, flexibility, and body awareness.
Healthy movement matters in a world where many children spend hours on screens daily. 🤸🏽♀️
5️⃣ Yoga supports confidence and self-esteem.
There’s no “winning” in yoga. Kids learn to trust themselves, try new things, and celebrate progress. ✨
🏫 Schools with yoga programs often report calmer classrooms, better behavior, and happier students.

Some kids don’t know how to slow down.
Some don’t know what to do with big feelings.
Some don’t feel calm in their own bodies yet.
And then someone walks into their world…with tools that actually help.

A child’s nervous system is always paying attention.
It notices tone of voice.
Body language.
Unexpected transitions.
Moments of uncertainty.
For children who have experienced trauma, these signals matter even more.
Their bodies may be constantly asking one question:
“Am I safe right now?”
When the answer is yes, something powerful happens.
Children begin to relax.
They connect more easily.
They learn, play, and participate with more confidence.
This is why trauma-informed awareness is so important for anyone working with kids.
When teachers understand how trauma affects the nervous system, they can create spaces where children feel supported instead of overwhelmed

“This spoke to me deeply.
Thank you iambrotherb and justliketrevor for putting words to something many people feel in their nervous systems every day.
Healing doesn’t always look like silence and incense. Sometimes healing looks like breathing through hard moments, stretching gently, laughing in community, and learning safety in your body again.
That spirit is at the heart of Yoga Sankofa.
Free community yoga in Gainesville every Monday + Wednesday at 9am at Bo Diddley Plaza.
All bodies welcome. 💛”
Imagine a world more more Black men practiced yoga… 🤔💭
What impact would this have on—

🫂 The community?

I’ll be honest. Yoga is not just something I teach. It’s something my daughter and I genuinely need.
Sometimes life feels heavy.
Sometimes the world feels loud, overstimulating, and hard to process. Sometimes we’re carrying stress, grief, anxiety, overstimulation, or just one of those days where everything feels like too much.
And sometimes… it’s as real and human as my daughter having a full panic attack because love bugs keep touching her. 😅
In those moments, yoga gives us tools.
Breathing. Grounding. Movement. Pausing instead of spiraling.
It helps us remember that we are safe in our bodies.
As a mother, I want my daughter to grow up knowing how to care for her nervous system. I want her to know that it’s okay to have big feelings and that there are healthy ways to move through them.
And me? I need those reminders too.
I carry motherhood, responsibility, healing, work, dreams, fear, hope, and community care all at once some days. Yoga helps me come back to myself over and over again.
Some days our practice looks peaceful. Some days it looks messy and full of bug-related drama. 😂 But every time we practice, we grow stronger together.
That’s why Yoga Sankofa exists.
Not for perfection. For real life. For breathing through hard moments. For reconnecting with ourselves and each other in community. 💛
