“My horse doesn’t need anything fancy”. “It’s not going to the Olympics”. It’s cheaper to have a proper dental done than the alternative. This could have been prevented before it started. It’s not just about knocking off points.

Had the honor the other day to be invited to Salina Farms for dentals on some beautiful horses. And to my surprise they sent this over. I cannot thank them enough for their kindness and the time they took to make this video. Bernadette and Melissa thank you both so much! It was a privilege to meet you and to be able to work on your horses.

The importance of a proper dental. This wolf tooth was removed from a middle aged horse owner says 10 yrs old. That means a minimum of 10 possibly more dentals have been performed on this beautiful mare and has been missed every time. Today we had the pleasure to help this mare and hopefully she will be significantly more comfortable. A dental technician should at the bare minimum have a speculum and a light to visually inspect the oral cavity. Knocking off points is NOT a complete dental. Equine dentistry has advanced in many ways. Please make sure your horse is receiving proper dental care.

This is a great example why dental is so important. It does not matter if you have a $500 horse or a million dollar horse. ALL horses should be getting proper care. And it is YOUR responsibility to make sure your horse is receiving proper dental care. Not just removal of sharp points but correcting malocclusions and balancing the mouth.

The quality of your headlamp directly affects your work. Why? I’ll explain.

First and foremost, it’s more difficult to fix something you can’t see. Why does human medicine spend so many resources on different types of imaging? In dentistry, practitioner errors will be easier to prevent with a better view of the workspace. Gone are the days when a cheap flashlight illuminates the mouth enough to see your work. When LED lights became available, suddenly we saw more details than we thought existed. Our work improved.

Today’s dental headlamps have advanced in brightness, battery life, color of light, wearability, and durability. Sure, you can buy a headlamp from the hardware store for $50 but if you’ve used an actual dental light, you’ll soon see the sacrifices you’re making with the cheaper light. Taking good photos and well-lit video is very important today so we can educate horse owners and properly document issues on digital charting programs.

The L7 Optics headlamp comes with a 1-year warranty. If your light needs repair, we get it back to you as quickly as possible. Our replacement battery can be purchased from Amazon and it’s a light you can wear all day long. The cost of this headlamp is less than a full day’s work for most practitioners and is a piece of equipment you’ll use on every single horse.

Drop by our website for more information and if you have questions, we’ll answer as quickly as possible.

Here’s an interesting one! Tooth extracted. A horse we saw a few weeks ago presented with weight loss and dropping hay. Well here’s our cause!
Unfortunately this was missed due to previous dentals being done without a speculum or headlamp. Luckily we were able to make him feel much better and put some weight on him!

Even the little ones!

This horse was presented to us by the owners in need of a dental. This sweet boy already had a dental performed a few months ago. So why are we here working on him shortly after? The reason for our visit was because he had a “smile” on his incisors. A “smile” or a ventral curvature creates a camming effect and prematurely separates the molars taking away the horse’s ability to masticate food properly. Its not just about the points!! Powerfloating allows us to correctly reduce a maloccclusion like this one so he can chew away happily! Equine dentistry has evolved immensely and is no longer just about knocking off points.
