Welcome aboard! We're Derek and Mallory, new sailors embarking on a year of adventure in the Caribbean.

Our boat's name is Zenos (short for zenoysne: the feeling that time moves faster as you get older) ⛵️

Goodbye Zenos. We ❤️ you!

We’re sitting at the airport about to board our flight home to Detroit. We’re feeling nostalgic, proud, and grateful for our magnificent journey aboard SV Zenos.

20 months
16 countries/territories
7,000+ nautical miles
…and a million memories

Onto the next adventure!

Our last sail on Zenos!⛵️

We set off from Port St Joe, FL to deliver our boat to Galveston, TX. The passage was 4 days of nonstop sailing west across the Gulf of Mexico. We passed hundreds of oil rigs, were circled by a military catamaran 🤨, watched stunning sunsets, and even saw whales 😍

As we pulled into Galveston, Zenos kicked into high gear, cruising into the harbor at 8.5 kts. She heeled over, bellied out her sails, and sprinted towards the finish line. With wind in our hair and salt spray on our faces, we rode her one last time in total joy.

We live this boat…and will miss her!

We flew the spinnaker yesterday on the first leg of our long journey home. As the sun was setting, I walked up on deck to look up at this colorful sail. It may be the last time we fly her 😢🤯

Trying to soak up every moment while we can…

Today, we say goodbye to our Dutch friends Vera and Jeroen on We met on neighboring mooring balls in Bonaire and have sailed side by side in 6 different countries during the last 8 months. Vera and Jeroen (and Bruno too 🐶) became our family on the water…as we celebrated holidays, birthdays, and anniversaries together.

Thank you guys for the grocery runs, the pineapple jokes, the passage cupcakes, the Colombian nights and the Panama days…thank you for playing Santa Claus, for organizing the scuba dives, and for casting off our dock lines 4826 times. We will miss you!

If you want to follow , they are headed south to Curaçao and then continuing their sailing adventure in 2023!

This is not goodbye, friends, just til next time… 💙

Back in the Bahamas! On this overnight sail from Bimini to the Berry Islands, we sailed through the largest lightning storm we’ve seen ⚡️

As the sun set, the wind shifted toward the storm and 60 miles of dark clouds moved over us ⛈

With a giant metal rod as a mast, lightning is always nerve racking on a sailboat. 😬 Thankfully, Zeus spared us on this one.

Happy Birthday Captain 🎣

This is Derek’s second birthday on the boat!! We’re celebrating in Key West, Florida where Derek first learned to deep sea fish. Swipe to see young Derek with a big catch! (…and his adorable Harry Potter glasses 🤓)

CHICHEN ITZA 🇲🇽

While in Mexico, we took a trip inland with to see the famous ancient Mayan city of Chichen Itza. It’s one of the seven wonders of the world! Our timing was 👌🏼 and we beat the crowds. This is Mallory’s fifth and Derek’s third wonder. Always so amazing to witness history up close.

So thankful this trip has given me time to read 📖

I always wanted to read more, but felt I never had the time. Now, I do…and am proud to say I finished my 28th book of the trip on this tiny little beach.

My favorites so far have been The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid, The Guest List by Lucy Foley, and The Glass Castle by Jeanette Wells.

I need book suggestions!! What should I read next?? Please leave recs in the comments 👇🏼
