Sakura Kokumai is currently on the US national team for Kata and is on her way to becoming our US representative in the 2020 Olympics for woman’s kata!
We will be supporting her in this adventure and hope to build a fan base that can root for her every step of the way!

This is the entrance gate to Shikina-En, the summer palace of the Okinawan Kings where they would receive diplomatic and trade envoys from Japan and China. A few yards after passing through this gate, to the left, visitors would encounter the house of Sokon Matsumura, the bodyguard to the Okinawan rulers, and one of the most important pioneers of modern karate.
During a recent visit to this beautiful site with the members of the SprIng 2014 CFA Seminars, my opposite number in the Rengokai, Kunio Uehara Sensei, mentioned that historians in Okinawa had recently unearthed more material on this iconic karate master, who provided security for three generations of the Sho Dynasty.
He is quoted as saying: “In karate the lower body must be like an old apricot tree, rooted to the ground and never moving. The upper body must be like a willow, flexible, strong, and resilient.”
As he told me this he pointed across the lake towards the palace where, side by side, stood a proud willow and an ancient gnarled apricot.

5 new cultural asset holders for "Karate and kobudo"

5 new cultural asset holders for “Karate and kobudo”

On May 7th 2013, the Okinawa Prefecture has announced that 5 masters have been recognized as Intangible Cultural Asset holder in the Field of Okinawan Karate and Martial Arts with Weaponry. They are: Ishikawa Seitoku sensei (87 years old, Shorin-ryu), Uehara Takenobu sensei (83 years old, Uechi-ryu), Hichiya Yoshio sensei (82 years old, Goju-ryu), Nakamoto Masahiro sensei (75 years old, Kobudo）and Higaonna Morio sensei (74 years old, Goju-ryu). (See photos below)

“Karate and kobudo” were recognized as an Intangible Cultural Asset in 1997 by the Okinawa Prefecture and there are now 14 masters who have been recognized as such asset holder.



In 1997, the first recognized masters were:

Nagamine Shoshin sensei

Yagi Meitoku sensei

Itokazu Seiki sensei



In 2000, the following masters were also recognized as asset holders:

Iha Koshin sensei

Tomoyose Ryuko sensei

Nakazato Shugoro sensei

Nakazato Joen sensei

Miyahira Katsuya sensei

Wakugawa Kosei sensei
