In Praise of the Quiet Class

Thank God somebody said this! And Jason Crandell articulated it so well (IMHO)! I've enjoyed taking classes with a cool playlist. And I've used music in my own classes - more out of a sense of pressure that it's expected and I wouldn't be a good teacher if I couldn't create an awesome playlist choreographed with my asana. But honestly, I prefer a quiet class. I can get distracted while teaching by my own playlist - or the inevitable techno glitches with sound systems, cords, power supplies, song segues, etc. Who needs that stress? And I prefer focusing my class prep time to the actual practice than to coming up with what I hope will be a popular playlist. Also, I want my students to be able to hear my instructions clearly. And I want to be attuned to their feedback via breath, sighs, groans, giggles, sniffles, etc. I now feel completely liberated from music in the yoga classroom. Let the sound of silence reign! I am full of sadness having just learned of the massacre in Orlando. I send prayers and Prana of peace, comfort and healing for the dead, the wounded and their families and friends.
