🏈 ➡️ 🤼 FOOTBALL PARENTS, THIS ONE’S FOR YOU!

We already know what’s coming. 😂

Football season wraps up, wrestling season is underway, and then our inbox gets the message:

“Sooo… is it too late to sign up for wrestling?”

Let’s skip that part this year. 😂

If your athlete plans to go straight from the football field to the wrestling mat, go ahead and get them registered for wrestling NOW.

👉 They can absolutely finish their football season first! We aren’t asking them to choose between the two.

We just need to know who’s coming so we can plan ahead and get singlets, shirts, and equipment ordered and ready.

Finish football. Hang up the helmet. Grab the headgear. We’ll see you on the mat. 🤼‍♂️

🤼 WRESTLING 101: How do you actually score points?

Folkstyle wrestling is a lot more than trying to pin somebody!

Wrestlers can earn points through takedowns, escapes, reversals and nearfalls.

A wrestler can control the match, rack up points, and win by decision without ever getting a pin.

Decision = the points decided who won. 👏🏾

Once you understand the scoring, watching a wrestling match becomes WAY more exciting.

And before long you’ll be one of those parents yelling “TWO!” from the stands before the referee even puts the points up. 😂

You don’t have to know anything about wrestling to get started.

Your child doesn’t need years of experience. They don’t need to already be strong, confident, or athletic.

They just need to be willing to learn.

Wrestling has a way of developing the things we want our kids to carry far beyond the mat — discipline, confidence, resilience, work ethic, and the ability to get back up when something is hard.

GYO Pioneer Wrestling is open to boys and girls in 2nd–9th grade, with practices twice weekly from September through February.

🎀🤼‍♀️ WRESTLING IS FOR GIRLS, TOO.

And girls’ wrestling isn’t just growing — it’s exploding.

Wrestling gives girls an opportunity to discover just how strong, tough, disciplined, confident, and capable they can be.

Your daughter doesn’t have to already be athletic. She doesn’t have to be aggressive. And she definitely doesn’t have to “look like a wrestler.”

She just has to be willing to try.

There’s something pretty incredible about watching a girl step onto the mat unsure of herself… and watching her confidence grow every time she steps back onto it. 💪🏽

So if your daughter has ever said, “I wonder if I could wrestle…”

The answer is YES. 👏👏🏽👏🏾

Bring us your daughters. We’ll show them just how strong they are. 💪🏽🖤

P.S. EVERY girl in this photo is a state champion or state placer and we have another state champion wrestler not pictured.

P.S.S. Two of the girls + one not pictured spent a week in Litchfield. IL training at a wrestling academy this summer. We’re eager to see what they bring back to the mat.

🤼 MEET THE COACH | COACH DEREK McCAIN

So… who will be coaching your kid this wrestling season?

Whether your wrestler is brand new to the mat or returning for another season, we want our families to know the people who will be in the wrestling room teaching, challenging, encouraging, and investing in their kids.

First up, meet our Head Coach, Coach Derek McCain, who is heading into his sixth year leading GYO Wrestling! He brings years of experience on the mat—both as a competitor and a coach—to our program.

🤼 Former collegiate wrestler
👨‍👧 Wrestling dad x 3
❤️ And someone who genuinely loves seeing kids fall in love with the sport that gave him so much.

For Coach Derek, youth wrestling isn’t just about building good wrestlers. It’s about teaching kids how to work hard, handle adversity, be coachable, compete with confidence, and get back up when something doesn’t go their way.

Of course, he’ll also happily spend an entire practice teaching your kid how to take someone down. 😂

We’re incredibly lucky to have him leading our GYO wrestlers into another season.

Got wrestling shoes collecting dust? We’ll take them!

We are collecting new or gently used wrestling shoes in ALL sizes to help make sure our youth wrestlers have what they need to get on the mat this season.

Kids grow FAST, and we know there are probably plenty of perfectly good wrestling shoes sitting in closets that no longer fit. Instead of letting them collect dust, consider passing them along to another wrestler! ❤️

And don’t worry if the shoes are too big for our youth athletes — any shoes we can’t use will be passed along to the high school wrestling program. Nothing goes to waste, and more wrestlers get the gear they need.
