True Freedom - Off The Beaten Path

So I know you all are dying to know the details of our spontaneous trip to South Dakota...a whole lot happened in such a short period of time (a week and a day) but I will attempt to get it all down in this post!

It all began with a conversation we had with a trucker friend we made at our job (it's a truck stop so we have a lot of trucker regulars that come through when they're in town). This particular man is Canadian and is usually down here for a couple of days or so every week and a half. He took a liking to us, and we him (even though we've had some bad experiences with Canadian snowbirds that go to Arizona over the winter...I think with them it was more financial status than a country citizenship issue). Anyhow, in talking we expressed our distaste for city life and our plans to go back on the road...and he came up with an idea that we just couldn't pass up. He was headed back to Canada with an oversize spool (so it was back country roads almost the entire way) and we could ride along with him if we wanted to!

Now neither of us have passports so a trip into Canada was out of the question BUT he suggested we could backpack in South Dakota for a few days while he dropped his load off, then meet back up with him for a return trip to Houston.

We found out on Sunday evening and left early Monday morning. The ride was beautiful...a whole lot of open farm land as far as the eye could see. The route took us out of Texas and through Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska before arriving in South Dakota.

We left Houston with nothing but our backpacks (including food) and 20 dollars in our pocket.

We arrived in Murdo, South Dakota at around 6:30 pm on Tuesday. Murdo is a tiny town of about 280 people...I'll get into more about there a little later in the story.

So now we are on foot, it's almost dark, and we don't see anywhere we can camp. We brought our hammocks thinking there would be trees...yeah, not so much.

So we started walking...we still had about 130 miles to get to Rapid City and all we could do was hope they had trees.

About 20 minutes into walking...

Back from the trip to South Dakota.... Amazingly cool skaters out there.... Just as laid back as the hills are lol.... Shoot out to them... The park left something to be desired though, built by construction workers with no skating backround... Back to the Hitman promoting grind!!!
