Our last hunt began at dawn, with a farm rooster's wake-up call echoing through the valley. We followed the sound of thunder made in response, and I found myself nestled in a thorny holly bush, feeling right at home on a fence line. As the sun rose, a silhouette came to life: a majestic tom perched on a limb, his feathers glowing in the morning light. We listened in awe as he called out to the hens, his gobbles resonating through the valley. The majority of the hens came off the roost beneath the tree. A single hen took a 100+ yard flight, landing mere feet away from us. Here come the rest of the hens following her call. The tom followed from his root, his strut and fan on full display. He pushed through the brush and up the hill side wading through the tall grass. The grass hid his bear…. I took a deep breath, weighing my options. The hens cleared, and the sun must have showed through the clouds, gleaming off his beard... An incredible 9-inch beard and 1.25-inch spurs lay there. A once in a lifetime experience… all over again … emotions ran high and my nerves refused to settle ! God is Good! Thanks for helping make this happen
