Daniel Coyle wrote in his book, The Culture Playbook, mentoring is incredibly powerful. A mentor is someone who helps you grow, make better decisions, and see the game and the world through a different lens. A mentor can encourage you and help you grow professionally and personally.
Having a good mentor can change your career and change your life. They can show you what to do and show you what not to do.
Former U.S. Women's National Soccer Team coach Jill Ellis would give each new, young member of the team a task: "Go sit next to an older player and listen to their scars." She said, "Every successful player is successful because they've failed over and over again. Having younger players learn about that early on is so impactful."
Coyle calls this Flash Mentoring. Flash Mentoring is when a younger athlete or coach approaches a veteran with low-stakes questions like:
- What are 1-3 things that you have done to get faster?
- What do you do before practice?
- How do you prepare for games?
- How do you handle fear and anxiety?
- How do you get over tough losses?
- What is something you wish you knew when you were younger?
The key for a young mentee is to see how your mentor thinks - how they see and handle opportunities and solve problems.
This week, find a mentor. Find someone who is doing or who has done what you are trying to do. And ask them a few questions about how they got to where they are at.

Our athletes need to know that they are more than the sport(s) they play.
TELL THEM.
Love your kids, not their stats. Let them fail. Encourage them to fail. They can handle it, but we have to teach them how and support them instead of being angry with them.
One day you will wake up and you won't have anyone to take to practice.
Enjoy the time you have.
(This one hit home...)
Love teaching tennis tot hear kiddos and seeing them grow each week
So happy for her!
Love this girl! Good attitude, always smiling and great with the little kids. Thank you D$ for your help today
Alway believe in yourself and your number one job is shine. Lift others up and show them your confidence.
How to show up with confidence:
You have to know who you are and OWN who God has made you to be. Don’t compare with the girls and “influencers” on social media. If we’re not careful we end up trying to BE like someone we were never called to be like. Stay focused on your lane! And stay true to who you are! Whether in your sport, school, college, or work. You were made shine! The more you spend loving who God made you to be, the less you will spend time comparing!

Let that sink in.
Power of choice is that you can be a duck or an eagle.
If you get up in the morning expecting to have a bad day, you'll rarely disappoint yourself. Stop complaining!
Don't be a duck. Be an eagle. Ducks quack and complain. Eagles soar above the crowd.
Let’s go Maxi!
Love artwork from our students. Thank you Daria💖

Perfection is impossibility but striving for perfection is not. Do the best you can. That is what counts.

Our tennis heroine. Miss Patty. 83 years young and still hitting hard.
With heavy hearts, we want to share the news that THE Kansas City tennis and table tennis legend Bill Guilfoil has passed at age 98.
When details about memorial services are announced, we will share with the KC family.
Bill started tennis at age 13 on the Plaza courts and served in the Army after high school and college.
He’s rubbed tennis shoulders with legends like Connors, Ashe, Paul Newman and Ginger Rogers.
He and wife Gray had four tennis playing daughters - Bridget, Shawna, Maureen and Eileen.
He played in the US Olympic Table Tennis trials in 2016!
He taught at several local facilities before finishing his career at OPRC. He also opened three Guilfoil Sporting Goods stores.
Our condolences to the Guilfoil family. Feel free to share your favorite Bill story. He had many!
