"But I played the part really well, and I knew how to play it."
That is what Dawn Pick Benson told me when we talked about the years people believed she had the pertect marriage, the perfect job and everything together.
She knew differently.
Dawn had started questioning her marriage, her career and the expectations she had spent years meeting.
But when your decisions affect your family, your faith, your work and the way people see you, admitting that something is wrong is only the beginning.
In our conversation, Dawn talks about the role therapy and travel played in giving her space to think, including the time she spent in Kosovo and a realization she had during a layover in Paris.
She recognized how often she had looked to other people, authority figures and even her faith for answers before listening to herself.
That part of her story matters because you can be highly capable and still spend years trusting everyone else's judgment more than your own.
Dawn eventually left the job she had accepted too quickly and found a way to bring travel and mentoring together in her work.
Today, one of the questions she uses to make decisions is simple:
"What brings me alive?"
