In just one month, Engine 1 is scheduled to be shut down.

Meanwhile, the City continues approving major growth in the areas Engine 1 helps protect.

The latest project near Grapevine Mills includes 248 apartment units, a 220-room hotel, a 275-seat restaurant, and additional hotel development planned for the future. As Grapevine continues to add apartments, hotels, restaurants, and other large-scale developments, the demand for emergency services continues to grow right alongside it.

What makes this particularly noteworthy is that Engine 1 would be the first-due engine company for this development. Yet before the project is even built, the City has chosen to eliminate that resource.

Instead of adding fire protection resources to keep pace with growth, Grapevine is shutting down its busiest engine company after 142 years of service to the community.

This is another example of approving large-scale growth and increased emergency service demand while reducing frontline fire protection resources.

For 142 years, Engine 1 has answered the call when residents, businesses, and visitors needed help. In just one month, that resource will be removed from service.

As Grapevine continues to grow, citizens should ask whether public safety resources are keeping pace.

More Growth. More Demand. Less Capability.

Today we remember the brave Allied soldiers who landed on the beaches of Normandy during one of the most significant military operations in history.

Facing extraordinary danger and uncertainty, thousands of young men crossed the English Channel and fought their way ashore in defense of freedom. Many never returned home. Their courage, sacrifice, and determination helped liberate Europe and change the course of World War II.

As we mark the anniversary of D-Day, we honor those who gave their lives, those who carried the fight forward, and all members of the Greatest Generation whose service shaped the world we know today.

May we never forget the cost of freedom and the sacrifices made on the shores of Normandy.

“The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you.”

— Dwight D. Eisenhower

We remember their sacrifice. We honor their legacy. We remain forever grateful for their service. 🇺🇸

👨‍🚒 FIREFIGHTER FRIDAY 🚒

Welcome to the first edition of Firefighter Friday, a new series highlighting the dedicated firefighters who serve our community every day. Through these posts, you’ll get to know the people behind the badge—where they work, the apparatus they are assigned to, their years of service, and a little about who they are away from the fire station.

Our first Firefighter Friday Spotlight!!

👋 Name: Jarred Irby

🎖️ Rank: Captain/Paramedic

🚒 Current Assignment: Engine 4

📍 Firehouse: 4 A-Shift

⏱️ Years of Service in Grapevine: 13.5 Years

🔥 Total Years in the Fire Service: 21 Years

💬 Why I Chose the Fire Service:
“I became a firefighter because I wanted honest work that mattered. It’s a job where you earn everything you get, serve people on their worst days, and go home knowing you actually made a difference.”

⭐ About Me:
Jarred is a devoted husband, father, firefighter, and craftsman. When he’s not serving the citizens of Grapevine, he owns and operates a small knife and tool company and can often be found providing plenty of free labor on his wife’s chicken farm. He believes in hard work, helping others, and taking pride in everything he does—whether that’s answering emergency calls, building quality tools, or supporting his family.

Thank you, Captain Irby, for your 21 years of service and dedication to the fire service, the City of Grapevine, and the community you serve.

This Memorial Day, we pause to honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Their courage, selflessness, and dedication to protecting our freedoms will never be forgotten.

As we gather with family and friends this weekend, we encourage everyone to celebrate safely and responsibly. If you are spending time at any of our area lakes, please remember to wear a life jacket, keep a close eye on children near the water, and make safety a priority for everyone on board.

Throughout the holiday weekend, Grapevine Firefighters Association members assigned to Marine 1 will be out on the water promoting lake safety and ready to assist anyone who may need help.

From all of us at the Grapevine Firefighters Association, we wish everyone a safe and meaningful Memorial Day weekend as we honor those who gave everything for our nation. 🇺🇸

The members of the Grapevine Firefighters Association are lifting up one of our own public safety families in prayer following the unimaginable loss of their son, Gator.

There are no words that can truly ease the pain of losing a child. Our hearts break alongside this family as they face a tragedy no parent should ever endure. In moments like these, we are reminded that behind every badge is a family, a home, and people who carry the same love, hopes, and fears as the community they serve each day.

We pray that God surrounds them with strength, comfort, and peace in the difficult days ahead and during today’s services honoring Gator’s life. May they find refuge in their faith, in the love of family and friends, and in the unwavering support of this community.

To our brother in blue and his family — please know you are not walking this road alone. Your brothers and sisters in FD stand with you, grieve with you, and will continue to keep you in our prayers.

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” — Matthew 5:4
