Everyone deserves the opportunity to improve their health in a supportive environment- but too often, those with disabilities and limitations find fitness spaces to be intimidating, inaccessible, or out of reach.

Kayla is now certified as an Adaptive and Inclusive Trainer, focused on helping adaptive athletes and disabled veterans train safely, confidently, and effectively in a way that works for their body and goals.

If you or someone you know is interested in adaptive training, message or call us at 970-793-4693

Cardio is important for heart health - as long as you get your heart rate up, you'll gain a stronger and efficient heart.

But if the cardio you are currently doing is a chore, you should consider a different kind.

Mauy thai, kickboxing, pickelball, dodgeball, wrestling - it all counts as cardio.

Try new things, learn a skill, and before you know it, you've finished your cardio!

Imagine this: you are at the doctor's office, and they ask if you are sedentary.

Most would say no, but most are.

ACSM guidelines state that if you do not meet the bare minimum requirements for exercise, you are sedentary:

1. 150 minutes of moderate intensity of aerobic activity a week (30 minutes a day, 5 days a week)

2. 2 days of resistance training

Risks of sedentary lifestyle:
1. Increase chance of cardiovascular risk (especially if heart attacks, stroke, or cardiovascular events in family history)
2. Increase chance of diabetes and metabolic disorders
3. Loss of muscle mass and strength - increases fall risk, osteoporosis, and metabolic disorders
4. Increased cancer risk
5. Mental health risks
6. Higher all-cause mortality: higher risk of dying from multiple causes

The main takeaway: it does not take much physical activity to gain benefits

What keeps people coming back?

The people waiting for them - not just the trainers, but the friends they made.

Everything is focused around keeping the ankles, knees, and hips happy.

It can be tempting to completely rest when experiencing ankle, knee, or hip pain.

But these kind of problems never solve themselves. In truth, the best thing you can do is modify exercises and loads.

Looking stupid and awkward when learning a new movement (skill, exercise, etc.) is quite literally, required for you to become proficient at it.

The primary motor cortex is in charge of voluntary movements - when we try a new movement, this part of the brain doesn't know what to do.

It has little-to-no reference, it's uncomfortable.

The result? Overcompensation, over-recruitment muscles.

To put it simply: it overreacts.

This is a good thing! It's a protective mechanism!

But it can make us feel awkward and stupid when we attempt to try a new exercise. So much so it stops people from trying at all.

But fear not, even we personal trainers feel stupid and awkward when trying something new.

The key is to have fun with it 🤓
