Have you been told too many times to stay down longer but your body just won't listen? Try this :) It may look silly, but I promise the reinforcement of the rack pulling on your neck as you try to stand up will get you to stay down longer.
Or...instead of some silly thing to attack the effect (like many training gimmicks) of your pop-up...lets go after the cause?
To stay down longer, you need to stay UP longer. Huh?
There are 3 people in the professional pool arena. The commentator, the player, and everyone else is a spectator including the referee.
The commentator says what will happen. They paint the picture for the viewer to know what to expect. They tell the future. "PLAN."
The player doesn't say or do anything except execute. "DO."
The spectator jumps up and says "Hey did you see that? Wow!" "REFLECT."
Unless you have a mechanical reason to pop up like a bad grip position or stance, your reason for popping up is most likely mental. Don't be a spectator to your own shot. Take more time in your commentating position...visualize the shot fully. Hear it, feel it, smell it, taste it. Now you have no surprises to hurry up to be in the spectator seat to see...you're the player, quietly executing with perfect stillness. 3 individual stops, just like pre-stance/pre-shot/post-shot routines or set/pause/finish.
Plan.
Do.
Reflect.
