GT Performance: Sports Performance Training and Physical Therapy
Developing speed, strength, power, health, and character, so your athlete gets the most out of their athletic career. 🟢⚫️🥇
When you get a regular team, you get a hodgepodge of athlete personality types. But, most team-sport coaches have to coach to the least-motivated denominator.
Their messaging goes out to engage and challenge the lazy kids who are holding the team back. Or even just to the average motivation level on the team.
This is where the advice paradox becomes problematic, though. The lazy or average kids just let it in one ear and out the other.
But, the conscientious overachievers fixate on being told that they’re not doing enough, even if it happens on a subconscious level.
Don’t get me wrong, we have our share of athletes who regularly need a firm foot to kick them into gear. And most every athlete goes through seasons where they need pushed a bit harder.
But, a lot of our athletes need to hear a message that who they are is already enough.
Yes, you should work your tail off. Yes, you should sell out for your dream. Yes, you should give it everything you’ve got.
But, you are human and you’re limitations are okay.
I don’t know. I just think this comes down to the art of coaching and parenting.
Some kids need pushed and challenged often.
Some kids are so self-critical and beating themselves up so much, that all they need from a coach is to be pulled back and reassured.
Most kids need both at different times. 🟢⚫️🥇

If you’re not getting the playing time you think you deserve, you have two options in your actions: be right or be effective.
If you want to be right, you can complain about how unfair or dumb your coach is. You can have a conversation where you tell him all the reasons you’re right and he’s wrong. And you’ll keep your butt on the bench.
Or, you can use some basic principles to be effective. I recommend initiating a conversation that goes something like this:
“I understand exactly where I’m at on the depth chart right now, and I’m definitely not asking for more playing time. I don’t want you to misinterpret this conversation right now, I’m not asking for more playing time. But all I want to know is what do you need to see from me in order for me to take that next step and get that more opportunity?
What exactly am I missing right now that you need to see from me that will allow me to get the opportunity to compete and perform on game day?”
Now you might not agree with what the coach says. It might be objectively wrong, but that’s not the important part here. The only thing that matters is that you make sure before and after every practice he sees you for thirty minutes working on that thing explicitly.
That’s your best shot at being effective.

On Father’s Day, Evie was reaching up on the counter trying to grab the present I got from my mother and father-in-law: a glass bottle of whiskey.
She wanted it… bad. Who knows why her little brain decided she was interested in that bottle, but she lost her mind when she couldn’t have it.
Everything about that bottle was bad for her.
It’s too heavy for her. She would instantly drop it. The glass would shatter and she’d cut herself.
Or, if by some miracle she did safely pull down the bottle and wave a magic wand to open it up, it’s filled with literal poison.
Her little almost-two-year-old brain is just not able to understand why I won’t let her have that bottle.
And that got me thinking… how often is that true for us, when we have no idea about it?
