For this week's LLOCAL STORIES, meet Odisnel Cooper Despaigne–or as many in Charleston know him, Cooper.

Cooper was the long serving goalkeeper for the Charleston Battery, and his story is one of harrowing determination, and faith!

His story begins in the city of Camagüey, Cuba. Before choosing soccer, Cooper attempted to play volleyball, but the option wasn't available to him. So at age 10, his soccer story began much later than many professionals.

Not long after he began playing soccer, he found that he was drawn to the goal, not as a striker, but as a goalie. It also helped that he was the tallest person on his team during those years. Cooper also credits his youth coach for ensuring that he would get a proper goalkeeping coach to help his skill and technique grow quickly.

Cooper was soon called up to the state level team in Camagüey. He played well enough to be later called into the Cuban national youth setup. He made the U-17 national team, later debuting at age 15.

From there, he entered residency at the Cuban national soccer school, where he was educated and trained regularly.

At 19 years of age, Cooper was the goalkeeper for the U-20, Olympic, and full men's national team for Cuba. He felt incomplete... during international competitions, Cooper saw that his skill level wasn't too dissimilar to others his age, though they were playing professionally, and he wasn't–Cuba doesn't have a professional league system. He described it as having fame with no money.

In 2012, Cooper traveled with the Cuban national team to a World Cup Qualifier in Canada. He made a decision that would change the course of his life. He and two others, Maikel Chang and Heviel Cordovés (both former Charleston Battery players), made the decision to leave the national team and defect. They waited a few hours after their arrival and ran from their hotel.

They entered into the United States, where they were granted asylum. Cooper and his friends took a 17 hour bus ride from Buffalo, NY to Jacksonville, FL where they had a friend.

After three months, Cooper was contacted by a scout where he was put in touch with the Charleston Battery. After making it through two cuts of tryouts, he'd signed his first professional contract.

Cooper made his Charleston Battery debut in 2013, experiencing immediate success having been named the starter in his first season. Some of his most memorable moments in a Battery shirt include sharing the pitch with World Cup winners like Kaká and David Villa.

Cooper attributes his success to his faith. He believes that without his faith in God, he might not have made it out of Cuba. It has given him the strength to persevere in situations where others might have given up, and it's allowed him to enjoy an excellent and successful career playing professional soccer. He is humble and grounded about soccer, realizing that it's not his identity, but a tool that he can use to help grown and encourage others.

In 2019, Cooper retired from professional soccer. He and his wife were expecting their first child–he said that he wanted to be present for his son every day of the year. A continuation of his soccer career would have kept him busy and away from his family. While he does miss the challenge of playing professionally, he's not out of the game entirely.

In late 2020, Cooper opened the Ebenezer Goalkeepers Academy. His goal in opening the academy was to help train the next generation of goalkeepers in the low country. Cooper offers a variety of coaching options, all led by him. His one-on-one approach is inspired by the coaching he received when he was a young player in Cuba.

Cooper, your story is unique and amazing.
You've had an excellent career, and we wish you all the luck in your future endeavors!

Thanks for sharing your LLOCAL STORY.

For this week's LLOCAL STORIES, meet Valentina Mosquera!

Valentina is an attacking midfielder and left winger from Buenos Aires, Argentina who calls Charleston her home.

Despite growing up in a soccer mad nation like Argentina, her soccer career began later than most, only having taken to the sport at age 13, following her move to the United States; though her ascendancy has been nothing short of meteoric. Valentina stated, "I grew up around soccer, in Argentina everyone knows how to play, so we would always have pickup games in the neighborhood."

Her career began in earnest when she began to play under coach Randy Richardson at Cainhoy Athletic Soccer Club. She also found success in the high school game, playing for Oceanside Collegiate Academy alongside LLOCAL STORIES alumni Dita Gillum, where they won a state championship together.

Valentina's rapid rise in Charleston got her the attention of Winthrop University, where she is currently enrolled as a freshman, having recently completed her first season of college soccer.

Valentina has also had the distinct pleasure of getting to train with her national team, having spent several weeks training with the U-20 Argentina Women's national team. She's gotten to test her skills against some of the best young players in the world, and has gotten to meet Argentine stars like Javier Mascherano.

Valentina's love for the game is simple. She stated, "it brings everyone together." She also recognized that every time she steps on the field, she is aiming to make her family proud. "They've helped me so much in past years", she said.

Valentina, we see big things on your horizon. Stay the course, and thank you for sharing your LLOCAL STORY with us!

We wish you every success in your career.

For this week's LLOCAL STORIES, meet Matthew Wagoner.

Matthew is 19 years old, from Greenville, SC, and is a freshman at the College of Charleston. He currently plays as a striker for Charleston United, in the UPSL.

Matthew's soccer career began at the age of 3, where he was coached by his father. He made the transition to club soccer at the age of 10, when he joined CESA Soccer Club.

To Matthew, soccer is art. The pitch is the canvas in which he gets to express himself. He states, "I love soccer because once you master a certain move or technique, there is always something new you can try to learn. A soccer game can have an infinite number of outcomes."

Naturally, some of Matthew's inspirations in the sport are greats like Lionel Messi and Neymar Jr, but one person who had a significant influence in his career is a teammate, Jay Hamdi. Matthew said, "My teammate, Jay Hamdi, opened my mind to the meaning of soccer, when I joined the team." Matthew credits Hamdi for helping him see that soccer is, in fact art.

In the next stage of his career, Matthew aims to play for the College of Charleston Men's soccer team. He also hopes to further his amateur career while playing for Charleston United. More than that, Matthew simply wants to love the game more than he already does. He wants the excitement and joy that he feels when he's on the pitch to never run out, all with the hope of playing professionally one day.

Matthew, we wish you the absolute best in your future endeavors.
Thank you for sharing your LLOCAL STORY!

For this week's LLOCAL STORIES, meet Claudia 'Dita' Gillum.

Dita is 17 years old from Charleston, SC. She currently plays soccer for Oceanside Collegiate Academy as a central midfielder.

Dita began her soccer career at the age of 3–because of her Colombian roots, soccer was the unifying thread in her family. She was initially coached by her uncle and grandfather before transitioning into club soccer at SC United Mount Pleasant (now SC Surf).

At age 15, Dita made the difficult decision to move clubs and play for CESA-ECNL in Greenville, SC. From there, she continued playing varsity soccer at Porter Gaud winning a state championship title alongside her older sister Mari.

Dita has since returned to playing her club soccer in Mount Pleasant, where she plays for SC Surf. Last year, she transferred to Oceanside Collegiate Academy where she won yet another state championship title and was named in the All-State team for South Carolina.

In July of this year, Dita committed her soccer future to Alabama Sate University, a Division-1 HBCU based in Montogmery.

Fun fact: Dita is also the premier jersey printing queen at Lloyd's Soccer, and she's by far a joy to be around in our print shop.

We wish Dita every success in her future soccer career and thank her for sharing her LLOCAL Story.

This is 'LLOCAL STORIES'–a platform where we highlight and celebrate local soccer players. Every week we will introduce a new player whose story we want to share, so that they might help to inspire the next generation.

Meet Caden Theobald.
Caden is 17 years old, from Charleston, SC. He is a central midfielder and is currently playing his soccer for Northwestern University in Chicago, IL.

Caden has been playing soccer since he was 3 years old and began his club career playing under his father, David Theobald, at Cainhoy Athletic Soccer Club in Charleston. In 2019, Caden joined the Jacksonville Armada FC academy, where he continued his development until graduating high school early in 2021 to pursue his dream of playing professionally by playing soccer at Northwestern University.

Caden's reason for playing the game is simple; all he's ever known is a ball at his feet. Soccer was his first love. He was inspired to play in central midfield because of players like Andrés Iniesta and Ronaldinho, both formerly of FC Barcelona. He enjoys dictating play and creating opportunities for others to score.

Caden Theobald has a bright future, we want to celebrate it by sharing his LLOCAL STORY

With laces or without... the choice is yours.

Some players need to be noticed. But the truly enlightened operate under the radar, slicing through the noise with the lightest touch. Focus on your soccer instincts in adidas Copa Sense. Foam Sensepods fill every gap in the heel of these firm ground cleats, keeping you at one with the soft K-leather upper. On the outside, Touchpods and Softstuds cushion touches to keep you pulling strings from the shadows.

The Adidas Copa Sense.1 and Copa Sense+ are available now, in store and online at lloydssoccer.com

Carli Lloyd recently discovered Youtube, and on that, she discovered Joga TV, Nike's old street soccer videos from the early 2000's. Carli was surprised and thrilled to see that Lloyd's Soccer carries the new Nike Joga TV backpack, along with other nike gear for indoor and street soccer.

If you're looking for something nostalgic for the soccer fan in your life this Christmas, consider the Nike Joga TV backpack!
