🦶 FALLS PREVENTION WEEK: THIS IS YOUR SIGN TO PRACTICE YOUR BALANCE!

Mr. Gene got the memo. 💪

He's working through several exercises designed to improve both static and dynamic balance, while also building the strength needed to actually support good balance.

And during North Carolina Falls Prevention Awareness Week, this is a message worth paying attention to.

The numbers are serious:

• Approximately 1 in 4 adults fall each year.
• If you've already fallen once, you're 2–3 times more likely to fall again.
• In 2025, falls among North Carolinians age 65+ resulted in 1,826 deaths, 24,822 hospitalizations, and 164,579 emergency-department visits.

Balance can be trained. Strength can be improved. And confidence can be rebuilt.

Don't wait for a fall to tell you it's time to work on your balance.

Practice standing still.
Practice moving.
Practice stepping.
Practice reacting.
Practice recovering.

Make balance part of your routine BEFORE you need it.

Mr. Gene is putting in the work—and he's a great example of what's possible when you make movement, strength, and balance a priority.

This is your sign. PRACTICE YOUR BALANCE! 🦶💪

🏴‍☠️⚖️ FALLS PREVENTION AWARENESS WEEK: A LITTLE BALANCE TALK

Just sharing a small piece of a presentation I recently gave on balance.

Sometimes the warning signs aren't dramatic. Maybe you're...

🚶 Shuffling your feet instead of picking them up.
🪑 Furniture walking—reaching for walls, counters, chairs, or anything else you can grab.
😟 Or maybe you simply don't have much confidence in your balance anymore.

Those are signs worth paying attention to.

Because here's the good news:

Balance is a skill. It isn't something you're either born with or without.
And like any skill, it can be practiced and improved.

You don't have to wait until you fall to start working on it.

We need to challenge balance in multiple ways:

⚖️ Static Balance — Can you control your body when you're standing still?
🚶 Dynamic Balance — Can you maintain control while moving?
⚡ Reactive Balance — Can you recover when something unexpected throws you off?

All three matter.

And the sooner you start working on them, the more opportunities you have to build confidence and improve your ability to handle real-life situations.

So if you're shuffling...Furniture walking...Or simply telling yourself, "My balance just isn't what it used to be..."

Don't wait. Let's get after it. 💪🏴‍☠️

🚨 FALLS PREVENTION AWARENESS WEEK — SEPTEMBER 21–25

This week is Falls Prevention Awareness Week in North Carolina. Governor Josh Stein has officially proclaimed this week to raise awareness about falls and fall-related injuries, particularly among older adults.

According to the North Carolina proclamation, unintentional falls are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries among North Carolinians age 65 and older. In 2025 alone, falls among older adults in our state were associated with 1,826 deaths, 24,822 hospitalizations and 164,579 emergency department visits.

Those numbers are hard to ignore. But there is the good news. Balance is a skill and skills can be trained at ANY age.

At Pamlico Pirate Health & Wellness, I look at balance in three different ways:

🔹 STATIC BALANCE
Can you control your body and maintain your position without moving?

🔹 DYNAMIC BALANCE
Can you maintain control while walking, stepping, reaching, changing direction or moving from one position to another?

🔹 REACTIVE BALANCE
What happens when something unexpected occurs? Can your body react quickly enough to catch yourself when you stumble, trip or lose your center of gravity?

The North Carolina proclamation specifically recognizes improving balance and strength as evidence-based strategies that can help reduce falls.

You don't have to come see me at the Studio to start working on it. I've posted plenty of content on my Page that you can easily refer back to and incorporate into your daily routine at home.

Start where you are. Use something stable for support. And always prioritize safety over difficulty. Just START.

I'll be sharing some simple balance exercises and challenges throughout this week that you can follow along with at home.

HOW GOOD IS YOUR BALANCE? What are you doing to make it better?

Use North Carolina Fall Prevention Week and this post as your SIGN to finally take the step and work on your fall prevention skills.

🏴‍☠️ YOU DON’T HAVE TO TRAIN WITH ME TO TRAIN WITH ME.

Brewer was in the studio today for an assessment, and he left with something pretty important: A plan!

We spent the time necessary to go through his exercises, making sure he understands the movements, proper technique, and how to execute them safely and effectively.

He left with a nutrition plan and a 12-week workout program designed specifically around his goals—and the program can be completed in any commercial gym.

You don't have to sign up for personal training for me to help you.

Maybe you just need help with your nutrition: I can help.

Maybe you need a workout program designed around your specific goals: I can help.

Maybe you already belong to a gym but aren't confident you're doing the exercises correctly: I can help.

My goal is to give you the knowledge, plan, and confidence to walk into your gym and execute the program on your own.

And if you have questions along the way? I'm just a phone call or text away. 📱

You have options when it comes to reaching your health and wellness goals.

Sometimes, you just need a solid workout and nutrition plan and someone in your corner to help you along the way.

🏴‍☠️ Let's figure out what works for YOU.

🏴‍☠️ HOW’S YOUR FLOOR GAME?

Getting down to the floor and getting back up are critical life skills. And just like strength, balance, and mobility, they can be taught, practiced, and improved.

This week in the studio, the theme has been making sure everyone is prepared for real life.

Some clients are practicing progressions that help them safely get all the way to the floor.

Others are taking on some of the more advanced and creative movements, challenging their mobility and control so they hopefully never have to relearn this life skill.

There isn't one right way to get down and back up. The right way is the one that works for YOU—your current strength, mobility, balance, and any pre-existing conditions or limitations.

Find your level.
Practice it.
Progress it.
Be ready for real life.

And if your floor game needs some work… I’ve got you! 🏴‍☠️💪

I can help you build the strength, mobility, balance, and confidence to get down—and get back up.

How’s YOUR floor game? 👇
