On September 29, 1988, John Smith captured his first Olympic gold medal in Seoul while wrestling through a severely abscessed cauliflower ear and a broken nose. His left ear had become so swollen and painful that doctors repeatedly drained it throughout the Games, and he competed with a protective pad heavily taped over the injury. Despite the pain, Smith shut out Soviet wrestler Stepan Sarkisyan 4–0 in the 62 kg final, beginning a run that would eventually include six consecutive World and Olympic gold medals.

Simon Roberts made history in 1957 by becoming the first Black wrestler to win an NCAA championship. Representing Iowa at 147 pounds, Roberts entered the tournament as the sixth seed but defeated higher-ranked opponents, including the second and fourth seeds, on his way to the title. His breakthrough remains one of the most important milestones in college wrestling history.

Osamu Watanabe completed one of wrestling’s most dominant competitive careers, winning Olympic gold, two World Championships, and an Asian Games title. He retired from his primary career with a perfect 189–0 record and did not surrender a point during his Olympic championship run. Watanabe’s speed, conditioning, and technical precision established him as one of the greatest pound-for-pound freestyle wrestlers in history.
