A Very Happy Holidays Everyone!

It’s here to believe we are now at the end of 2021.

We spearheaded our GoFundMe Campaign at the beginning of the pandemic when we were in great need. Your support in our fundraising efforts made a huge difference. You helped us survive as small, family run business through these difficult times. We’ve just barely squeaked by when most of the Bay Area companies like ours could not. The escalating gas costs, feed costs and animal care costs are crippling ~ they have almost doubled. To those of you who have hired us to join you and those who have supported us here, we will be forever grateful. It is our hope that you might feel moved to make an additional contribution now at this year’s end. Getting though winter months is always hard. The extreme weather we’ve been having coupled with ongoing supply chain issues, is making it particularly difficult.

And with that said, we are always mindful of just how fortunate we are. Animals like our beloved 11 year old Nigeria Dwarf goat, Gaia Mia (photographed here) remind us of the love, joy, and happiness our animals bring into peoples’ lives.

Gaia is not only a mother, but she is grandmother and great grandmother as well and is the foundational matriarch of our herd. We rescued Gaia from a dairy farm when she was just a day old and bottle fed her in our home. Even though she now lives in the barn, she doesn’t think she is a goat and still follows us around the farm just like a dog.

Stories like this have defined our company for over 25 years. And we could not do all we do without our community’s ongoing engagement and support.

While the second half of this year has seen business returning somewhat, people are still hesitant about hosting “events” in their backyards, and our corporate, school and community clients have in large part still been in hibernation. This has impacted our income stream as an event business immensely.

Compared to last season when people were coming out in droves as the lockdown loosened, this year was moderate at the pumpkin patches. We lost income not only from so few schools scheduling, but from losing the last week and a half of our business as unprecedented intense storms leveled us not once, but twice! Heavy rains and huge winds blew down our brand new tents, for the second year in a row!! A huge shout out to a wonderful friend who held down a tent frame while we were trying to extricate our cows, Gracie and Ivy Belle, Lacey our mother sow and her piglets and tortoise, Michael Jackson who were pinned under the torn canopy and twisted and broken tent frame during a torrential downpour and huge winds. He was hanging with all strength, and almost flying like superman to keep the tent from pinning me against our truck as that huge gust of wind, blew our second 16 x 30 tent down the field like a piece of paper.

That was a close call for all of us. Never have I seen our cows more happy to return to their cozy paddock and box stall. Clearly no matter what, animals must be tended to. They depend on us for their very well being. But truly, Holy moly!

It took us an entire month to clean up all the debris, broken tent poles and soaking wet hay bales. I am not sure I’ve ever felt more exhausted.

And yet, as if that wasn’t harsh enough, last week, sudden heavy and intense rain caused a landslide at the local dump across from our farms. A huge wall of mud and water came down in an enormous landslide and the creeks flooded their banks. More than three feet of water and sludge entered the entrance of the ranch, winery and neighboring farms destroying our on-the-farm Party site on Pastorinos Farm and their family home.

Worry not, all our animals were safe and our tiny home office did not float away like Noah’s Arc. Alas, these extreme weather events gravely impact those of us who make a living off the land and with animals. Local farmers are the stewards of the land here in our Half Moon Bay community. It is this community with whom we interface to create our camps for children, agro-tourism and seasonal special events that benefit the public. We have had to cancel our on-the-farm events and our winter Pony Camp to due to the toxic sludge that has covered the land where we host our events.

The amazing thing about this community though is that everyone pulls together to help each other recover and find the best possible solutions. This is the second year in a row that we have all suffered due to adverse weather events from the threats of fires and huge rains last year, and now the flooding and landslides from last week.

Things are a struggle for all of us. And we are keeping our heads high focusing on all the good in our lives. In many ways our animals save us over and over again. Their unconditional love and how much they depend on us, makes going out in the worst of weather to tend them an honor, not a burden.

We continue to relish in the outpouring of love our programs and animals bring.

We have had a very enjoyable Christmas and Nativity December season doing winter wonderlands and Bethlehem re-enactments. The indomitable human spirit is such a miracle to behold. The joy people experience from spending time with our animals is so healing. After everything we’ve all been through collectively, our animals have been true saviors. They remind us of being in the moment and going right back up to LOVE no matter what. Our photo and story of Gaia Mia was taken at a living Nativity. The organizer was so moved she came up weeping at the end. She said watching the young people dressed as Shepards and wisemen tending Mary Kate and Asheley our sheep, holding our Llama, Kuzco as the stand in camel and tending our donkeys, Daisy and Louise touched her so deeply. She was so touched by how even the tough teenage boys became soft and tender with the animals. She said it was just what they needed. Perhaps it is just what we all need. To soften and go back up to trust and love and kindness after all we’ve endured these past months.
