Shoot the Lights Out Basketball Academy

Shooters are not born, they're made.

Operating as usual

02/18/2023

The Shoot the Lights Out Basketball Academy will host two offensive improvement camps this summer to help your son or daughter improve their shooting technique and footwork.
The first camp will be held at Dundee HS on June 26-29 (Monday thru Thursday) from 9am to 12noon. The cost will be $75.
The second camp will be held at Avoca HS from July 17-21 (Monday thru Friday) from 9am to 1pm. This will be our 17th summer at Avoca. The cost will be $90.
For both camps, the fee rises the closer you get to the camp dates so it is wise to register early. This also helps our staff as we plan our camps and order camp t-shirts.
Registration forms are available when you contact Bill Hopkins at [email protected].
We guarantee your son or daughter will have all the information they’ll need to become a great shooter. It will be, however, up to them to make time to practice the technique on a daily basis. We recommend 500 shots per day if they intend to be a serious shooter/maker! Being a self-taught shooter does NOT cut it. Register soon to have your child be on their way to being a reliable shooter, a reliable MAKER of shots - a player coaches cannot keep out of their lineup.

05/23/2022

Our Shoot the Lights Out Basketball Camp at Avoca HS is on the horizon. The camp is scheduled for July 18-22 from 9am to 1pm for girls and boys in grades 5-12. We are very excited to return to the gym after a two year hiatus due to Covid.
The graduates of our camp have benefited from the content of our teachings over the last 20 years. Not only do we teach, we try to inspire, try to motivate and certainly try to encourage all our campers every year to take the information we pass on and get them to work to improve. There are no instantaneous improvements. No magic wand to wave. Just effort on the camper’s part to get better.
We can’t wait to help this year’s campers to Shoot the Lights Out!!
Contact Bill Hopkins at [email protected] for a registration form.

02/25/2022

Due to a conflict, the dates of our Shoot the Lights Out Offensive Improvement Camp at Avoca HS have changed. The new dates are now July 18-22 (M-F) from 9am to 1pm. The camp is designed for boys and girls in grades 5-12. We have more good news as well. The cafeteria staff at Avoca HS will treat our campers with lunch! How fortunate are we!
We can’t wait to get back into the gym to teach our young players how to become great scorers. The local boys and girls rosters are riddled with Shoot the Lights Out graduates. Many of whom have received all-star recognition. Are you the next all-star? Join us in July and discover our secrets!

02/09/2022

After two years, we have scheduled our Shoot the Lights Out Offensive Improvement Camp at Avoca HS on July 25 to July 29 from9 am to 1pm. Many thanks go out Bill Collmer, our host at Avoca HS and to the Avoca Administration for approving our camp for 2022. We are all very excited to get back to the gym and teach our area basketball players the fundamentals of shooting a basketball. Not to mention, the myriad of offensive skills that we offer and teach to afford every player the opportunity to achieve offensive greatness. To receive a registration form, contact Bill Hopkins at [email protected] or call him at 607-738-5307.

12/08/2021

We are optimistic about hosting a camp in Avoca in 2022. After two years away, we can’t wait to get back into the gym and teach both young and older players the proper technique of shooting the basketball. The challenge is to inspire those players to correct their flaws in their technique, if they exist in our estimation. Knowing the technique without the willingness to practice guarantees nothing!! We feel confident in our abilities to teach and motivate.

Keep your eyes and ears open in the spring. You, too, will soon be Shooting the Lights Out.

05/23/2021

Our Shoot the Lights Out Basketball Camp has been canceled for 2021. Our staff has decided in light of Covid-19 and all the precautions we would have to take to comply with the Avoca Administration as well as the Steuben County Health Department, it would be very difficult to conduct a camp under the conditions set forth.
We look forward to 2022 where we believe our campers and staff can participate in a camp safely allowing our staff to teach and our campers to learn and practice the offensive skills in a safe and uninhibited environment

12/21/2020

Looking forward to 2021 and getting back on the court to assist young players to becoming an offensive threat! If you are interested, our shooting instructional video is available. Contact me at [email protected]
Merry Christmas everyone!

Coach Hopkins

07/27/2020

Today would have been the first day of our Shoot the Lights Out Offensive Improvement Camp at Avoca HS. Due to COVID 19, we were forced to cancel our camp this year. WE WILL be back and better than ever next summer ready to teach our youth how to shoot the basketball correctly. The how is what we do. The effort to practice is what you do!

05/22/2020

Sadly due to the coronavirus, our Shoot the Lights Out Offensive Improvement Camp at Avoca HS has been canceled this summer. We are optimistic about returning next summer (2021) to offer our shooting instruction to all interested basketballs players.
If your son or daughter has already registered for this year’s camp, it will be applied to next year’s.
Just because our camp has been canceled this year is not an excuse to not try to improve your game in this off-season. Our shooting instructional videos are available to guide your improvement along the way. Contact me via phone or email if you are interested in these videos.
Thank you and please stay safe.

Shoot the Lights Out Basketball Academy 02/16/2020

Our 13th Annual Shoot the Lights Out Offensive Improvement Camp is scheduled for July 27 - July 31 from 9am to 1pm at Avoca HS in Avoca, NY.

The camp is hosted by Bill Collmer, a long-time Avoca basketball advocate and will be directed by Max Young, the Varsity Girls Basketball Coach at Elmira Notre Dame.

It is a camp known for purely offensive basketball. We will teach each camper the fundamentals of shooting the ball, shooting footwork and scoring the ball. We GUARANTEE your child will improve throughout the week. Once our camp is finished, however, each camper’s improvement will be singularly up to them. Will they be a participant in the game of basketball OR do they want to be great? That choice is theirs!!

If your son or daughter attended last years camp, they will receive a form in the mail this spring. If this is a new venture for you, there are 3 ways to access a registration form:

1. Go to our web site
www.shootlightsout.com (registration forms will be available on our site within two weeks)
2. Contact Bill Hopkins via email at
[email protected] OR call him at 607-738-5307

07/30/2019

GREAT OPENING DAY at Avoca HS setting a record with 66 campers breaking the old record of 62. Good things are happening in our area with this many young players yearning for offensive basketball instruction. The interest is off the charts. It’ll be our job to turn that interest into passion. Passion to WORK on their game not just participate. It is that process that separates the average players from the accomplished ones. The rest of the week should be exciting!! Many Thanks to Bill Collmer, Max Young, Jordan Haggard and Lucas Rossington. Teach, Teach, Teach!!

Many thanks to Head Boys Basketball Coach Paul Burgert for the invitation to travel to NEB to teach boys and girls how to be a better offensive player. There were only a handful of campers who had been to our camps in the past, so for most this was a first-time experience. Their effort and attentiveness was superb! I will be watching the boys and girls teams at NEB with enthusiasm this coming winter. Go Panthers!!

That choice is yours and yours alone! We can help but you have to work!

Shoot the Lights Out Basketball Academy

12/18/2018

We are looking forward to next summer’s camps. Although it won’t appear as a Shoot the Lights Out sponsored camp, at least one possibly two camps will take on the heading of Corning Hawks Basketball Camps. I was fortunate to be named the head boys basketball coach at Corning Painted Post HS in late summer. So we are working on the details of our camp(s) to be held at the incredible facility at Corning HS.
We will keep everyone informed as time moves along.
We wish you all a Merry Christmas and a joyous Holiday Season!!!

10/30/2018

Been working on camps for next summer. There is a good chance we will host two separate weeks of camp at Corning’s incredible facility. You may not recognize it as it will advertised as Corning Hawks Camps but it’s still us in disguise.
As the winter moves along, keep an eye on our website (shootlightsout.com) for more details.
In the meantime, catch a Corning Hawks Boys Basketball game. We hope our players “Shoot the Lights Out”!!!

Registration forms are available at our web site : www.shootlightsout.com. The camp is for boys and girls in grades 5-12. We guarantee offensive improvement IF the player is willing to work hard to improve. Everybody feels they are a shooter but are you a MAKER of shots? The player cannot be one without, first, knowledge as to how to shoot properly then be willing to change how you shoot and finally, and most importantly, be willing to PRACTICE. One cannot blame the coach for not playing you IF you cannot make shots at a high percentage. Every coach loves good shooters! Come join in the fun on June 25-June 29!

Had a great day at Northeast Bradford on October 7th at our shooting clinic. The boys and girls were outstanding listeners. I want to thank Coach Bergert and the staff who assisted. Everyone bought in to what was taught. 4 Hours is a long time to give their fullest. That is what they did.
Best of Luck to all the players

Shooting Clinic at Northeast Bradford on Saturday October 7 at 10am hosted by the NEB basketball coaching staff.

08/21/2017

A one day shooting clinic will be held at Northeast Bradford HS on Saturday October 7 from 10am to 2pm.
Head Boys Coach Paul Burgert and Head Girls Coach Jim Davis are hosting the event.
As always we are looking forward to teaching the proper technique of shooting the basketball as well introducing some offensive skills. The goal is first to inspire the youth to wanting to become a better offensive player. Secondly, give them the knowledge of how to perform these skills. Finally, have them understand that they hold the key to improvement by practicing these skills knowing good things do not happen overnight.
Very excited about teaching this great game and looking forward to October 7th.

07/29/2017

We just concluded our Shoot the Lights Out Camp at Avoca HS. Many thanks goes to Bill Collmer, our host, for all the work he put in to promote our camp as well as being the best advocate for Avoca Basketball. Thanks Bill for all you do!!!
Thanks goes to Max Young as well, my assistant at Notre Dame, who instructed at all 3 of our camps this summer.
Our award winners for the Avoca Camp were:

Providing opportunities for local players to improve their offensive skills has always been our mission. It's what the players do with this information along with the willingness to work that can springboard players out of mediocrity and into the limelight. Coaches have no choice but to play players who can score. Plain and simple!! We'll keep trying to offer players opportunities to improve!

07/13/2017

Just concluded our Finger Lakes Camp at Odessa Montour HS. Once again, very proud of our campers for their effort to get better throughout the week. It was guaranteed to each of them they would be a better, more complete player than they were at the beginning of the week IF they worked hard. They all lived up to our guarantee. It confirms to this ole coach that we do, in fact, have passionate basketball players in our area that ARE willing to work and not expect a magic wand to be waved over them to make them better.

We also want to thank our staff, Toby Wirth, Joe Prunier and Derrick Stark, for their teaching ability as well as their interaction with our campers . Earlier in the week Bill Baker, the new boys' basketball coach at Haverling High School in Bath, NY, gave us a couple days of time to our camp. We want to thank him as well.
All our campers gave great effort and improved as the week went on. One of our most youthful camps we've ever had, that did not deter their determination to get better and compete.
We recognized 7 of our campers during our closing ceremony with various awards for not only their effort but also their eye contact and genuine passion for the game.
