For generations, a massive cottonwood stood as a landmark for early settlers in Franklin County.

The historic Sentinel Tree was removed earlier this year after deteriorating, but its story isn’t over.

A new cottonwood is now growing near the original site, complete with a memorial marker honoring the historic tree.

The North Butler School Board has decided not to renew Superintendent Bryan Boysen’s contract after the 2026-27 school year.

Boysen currently serves as the shared superintendent for North Butler and Clarksville. Board President Ty Crawford-Miller says the decision follows discussions about performance, leadership goals and expectations.

The two districts plan to continue sharing the superintendent along with other positions. The districts hope to have a new superintendent selected by Christmas break.
