🏑 HOW I’D NAVIGATE D1 FIELD HOCKEY RECRUITING IN 2026 🏑

1. Build a RECRUITING BRAND. Since I was in the recruiting process, social media has changed the game. Start a separate field hockey Instagram. This is your athletic resume. I’d include game highlights (first touch, defensive plays, goals). I’d also include lots of training clips and stick skills in real time. Let your personality show and have fun with it! Coaches recruit people, not just skill sets. If coaches feel they already know you before a call, you’re ahead.

2. Make coaches remember YOU. If you’re serious about a school, go to their camps and clinics — but don’t just attend. COMPETE! Introduce yourself to the coaches, make eye contact, be the hardest worker on the pitch. Remember: effort, coachability, and consistency stand out way more than one flashy play to coaches.

3. Find your EDGE. Everyone who plays D1 field hockey is good. So what makes you different? Speed, grit, defense, hockey IQ, fitness, a specific skill set, etc. I harp on this all the time, but you do not need to be near perfect at every skill. Find one skill you can become elite at and use it consistently in games and practices. Find something that separates you.

🏑 MY DIVISION ONE GAME DAY NON-NEGOTIABLES 🏑

1. GAME SPEED warm-up. Most turnovers happen early in the game because players are still adjusting. If the game feels fast in the first 5 minutes, the warm-up was too slow. Hit the net, give your teammates hard and accurate passes and run with speed.

2. First shift SETS THE TONE for the rest of the game. Your confidence is decided early. A clean first touch, a tackle, or a simple outlet calms the game down and lets you play loose instead of tight.

3. Next play mentality is huge. If you make a mistake, think to yourself: NEXT. If you dwell on a mistake, you won’t play your game. Everyone makes mistakes — good players respond immediately and keep playing their game.

🏑 3 THINGS I WISH I KNEW BEFORE PLAYING D1 FIELD HOCKEY 🏑

1. Conditioning is EVERYTHING. You can have the best skills on the field, but if you’re gassed, they don’t matter. The most fit players make the better decisions late in the game. The most fit players separate themselves in OT. It doesn’t take skill to be in shape.

2. Practice HOW YOU PLAY. This is a big one. If you coast in practice, you will coast in games. Games expose your HABITS. Practice is preparation.

3. Play YOUR game. You didn’t get recruited because you play like someone else. Sometimes I found myself trying to force skills that didn’t come natural to me. Know your strengths and play YOUR game.
