Before it was Elizabeth Park, it was known as Slocum’s Island.

The 162 acre property was the private estate of the Slocum family, a prominent name in Trenton’s early history. In 1919, Elizabeth Slocum’s children donated the land to Wayne County with one requirement: it must be preserved as a public park and named in their mother’s honor.

Their generosity helped establish what would become the Wayne County Park System. The original Slocum residence remained a centerpiece of the property for years and later served as the park’s clubhouse.

Today, this “emerald jewel” along the Detroit River remains a testament to the Slocum family’s vision for public green space, a place where residents can connect with nature and local history.
