The following is taken from New York in the War of the Rebellion, 3rd ed. Lyon Company, 1912. This regiment, Col. Thomas A. Davies, was accepted by the State and received its numerical designation May 9, 1861; organized at Albany and there mustered in the service of the United States for two years May 15, 1861. In May, 1863, the three years' men of the regiment were assigned to the 121st N. Volunt

In May 1861, the newly formed regiment was issued 150 P1840 Springfield rifle muskets by the State of New York, which were used for training. These smooth bore flintlock muskets had been retro-fitted with rifled barrels and percussion caps. On June 25th, shortly before the regiment departed Albany for Washington, D.C., they were issued 600 more Springfields. Arriving at President Street station in Baltimore, the men loaded their rifles in preparation for attack by pro- Confederate mobs. As it turned out, the sullen crowds thought better of it. In July, while the men were camped at Washington, the old Springfields were exchanged for P1853 three band British Enfields rifles (pictured below). The Enfield, which can be seen in the field in the Page profile image, were used by the 16th NY infantry until they mustered out in May, 1863.
