My biggest takeaway from Serbian volleyball gyms:

STOP FIXING EVERYTHING FOR THEM.

This is hard for me because I’m a coach who wants to correct everything. Every rep. Every detail. Every mistake.

But I’m shifting.

Teach it clearly.
Set the standard.
Hold them accountable.
Then LET THEM FIGURE IT OUT.

Let them struggle. Let them problem-solve. Let them make the mistake again.

Because constantly interrupting and correcting doesn’t always create better players.

Sometimes it creates athletes who are constantly looking at the coach for the answer.

What I saw in Serbian gyms was different.

The coach gives direction. The standard is clear. Then the athletes WORK.

And I think there’s a parent lesson in this too.

There is absolutely a time to advocate for your child. There is a time to ask questions, step in, and protect them.

But not every struggle requires intervention.

Sometimes our job is to listen without solving. To ask, “What do you think you need to do?” instead of immediately giving them the answer.

A hard practice. A correction they didn’t like. A role they’re frustrated with. A mistake they keep making.

Those moments can actually belong to THEM.

We can support them without taking the struggle away from them.

Maybe that’s the balance for all of us:

High instruction.
High accountability.
Strong support.
Less rescuing.

Teach them well. Hold them to it. Be there when they truly need you.

But give them enough room to become capable without you.

LET THEM FIGURE IT OUT.

So here’s the question I’m asking myself as a coach—and I think parents should ask it too:

Am I actually helping them become more capable… or have I become so involved that they don’t get the chance to figure out what they’re capable of?

“BOA is expensive.”

I hear it. ALL. THE. TIME.

But before you decide that, ask yourself:

What is my athlete actually getting?

Who is coaching her?
Is she actually being developed?
Is she getting stronger?
Are her fundamentals improving?
Is her progress being measured?
Is there a PLAN behind her training?

Playing volleyball and developing volleyball players are NOT the same thing.

We’re not trying to be the cheapest option.

We’re building something different for female athletes. And have been for 10+ years.

STOP COMPARING THE PRICE TAG.
COMPARE THE VALUE.

Playing volleyball and LEARNING volleyball are not the same thing.

School of Volleyball is one of my favorite classes at BOA because we slow the game down and teach the fundamentals correctly from the beginning.

And that matters.

I see athletes all the time who have played 2–3 years of rec volleyball, but when I evaluate their fundamentals, I have to tell them: you’re still a beginner.

That’s not an insult. They’ve simply never been taught.

Most rec leagues and school programs don’t have enough time to break down footwork, movement, passing mechanics, serving mechanics, ball control and the WHY behind each skill. They have teams to prepare and games to play.

So it becomes play, play, play without enough actual instruction.

If your daughter is just starting volleyball, this is the time to build her foundation the right way. It is much easier to teach good habits from Day 1 than undo bad ones later.

Don’t wait until she’s been playing for three years to start teaching her how to actually play.

Build the foundation first. Then build the player.
