Hachi Maru Hachi Volume 3 is here! This is HMH's biggest issue to date with over 150 pages and four manga stories! Pictured here is "Refraction" by Caitlin Slattery (above) which contains absolutely no dialogue, the story is revealed completely through Caitlin's enigmatic illustrations. Below is "You're Not Alone" by Jonathan Pinches featuring a heroine any anti-social anime fan can relate to. Look for us this weekend at Kawaii Kon, Artist Alley table #76.

Let's start out the new year with some (possible) new characters from Rose Dela Cruz! We're not sure if they'll make it into Rose's new manga but how can you resist these contrasting character types. Rose makes great use of the atmospheric qualities of graphite showing varying textures from smooth to wrinkly skin.

A very Merry Christmas from Hachi-Maru-Hachi! Marco and Will from Kaci Horimoto's upcoming manga "Death in Numbers" pose for a quick Polaroid photo (or maybe Instagram...or Twitpic? How about a Vine?) Marco's height gives him some advantage over his best friend Will when it comes to sneaking in a pair of bunny ears! How do you plan to spend your Christmas?

What's Up Wednesdays! At our weekly meeting last week Tara (the artist behind Eternal Blade and in the green shirt at the back) was busy working on the newest chapter of her story. I think there's something to be said when you pair Tara's drawing below with a photo of the sometimes intense conversations we have at the meetings. Internal dialogue much?

What's Up Wednesdays! Inking is an inevitable part of manga-making. Earlier this year we filmed Tara Tamayori inking a page from her manga "Eternal Blade." Notice all the care put into drawing Aria's wispy hair! Hope you all have a Happy Thanksgiving tomorrow!

What's Up Wednesdays! Rose Dela Cruz, the illustrator behind "When the Music Stops" recently took a much-needed trip to Italy. There she was able to indulge in her love of renaissance art and did this wonderful study of a Leonardo da Vinci sketch from 1483! She says "I couldn't help but smile while drawing her because she had such a lovely and tender expression on her face."

What's Up Wednesdays: Not all manga are created equal, but they tend to start out the same way. From an idea! But how do you get from what's in your head out on to the paper? The draft here from Cat's story shows this process as she draws out scenes that were once only a part of her imagination. It's during this stage that the story can easily be altered or edited without having to re-ink all those pesky little details.
