Rules of Running #2. Prove yourself worthy. Prove to yourself your determination to succeed. Set a workout schedule and keep to it.
The shadow's second rule of running is: YOU MUST PROVE YOURSELF WORTHY. You are constantly being judged. Every workout is a test. For you to become the vessel that serves all mankind you will be tested constantly. Your courage and dedication has to be proven through pain and agony. You have to prove that you can go through the bad times and the good times without giving up. Your courage is tested constantly. Only the runner who is truly dedicated to being of service can endure the trials you come up against. You must prove yourself worthy to be the person that will one day change the world.
The shadow's 10th rule of running is: ATTACK INJURIES AGGRESSIVELY BUT NEVER FEAR THEM. Injuries respond to ice, pressure, elevation, rest, and heat. If you suffer an injury, ice it as soon as possible. Use ice as often as possible. Use an elastic wrap or your hand to put pressure on the injury. Elevate the injury above the level of your heart to help it heal quickly. Rest from running, but rest aggressively. Use crutches to walk so you can rest the injury completely. Heat followed by ice repeated every 15 minutes helps the body heal faster. Don't wait for your injury to heal. Lead the way.
"Have fun. Sometimes I think we are too serious. Go swimming or fishing or girl-watching on your runs instead of going to just run. Relax and enjoy life. This world is a very special gift of smells and sounds and sights. Being a runner means that you can see those sights and smell those smells easier than non-runners. Have adventures in running instead of workouts. Feel the wind combing through your hair and smell the flowers as you run by." ~ Running Tip #10 from Gerry Lindgren.
Gerry never ran a 10-mile run. He didn't start out to do a 20-miler, nor did he ever attempt an 88-mile run. I know because I monitored his thoughts. Instead, he ran to the Beacon, went fishing on Peone Creek, or ran to Mount Spokane. A 10-mile run is a training run whereas a run to the Bowl and Pitcher rock formation along the Spokane River is an adventure. They are different as day and night. On a training run you see a giant woodpile and you attack a task. On a fun adventure there is no woodpile. ~ Gerry Lindgren's Book on Running

DREAM AN ENORMOUS DREAM. An enormous dream is reason to sacrifice yourself to running. Winning a gold medal or setting a world record are not worthy of enormous dream status because they are selfish. Dream a dream of changing the world. That is what I am trying to tell you in this book. It is possible. All those foolish kid dreams you quit dreaming as you grew older are not just kid dreams. Your running life could change the world. Dream an enormous dream.
"Records are important in running because they set a higher standard for other runners to achieve. They are made to be broken. Setting a high standard is the ultimate service a runner can do for running. When another runner beats that mark all the hard work that went into the record seems justified." ~ from Gerry Lindgren's Book on Running.
