How do I create mermaids? 🧜‍♀️✨

Every strong, confident little swimmer starts as a beginner — and just like a mermaid’s journey, it begins with learning to feel safe, calm, and at home in the water.
Many parents ask, “Will my keiki hate swim lessons?”
The truth is, in the beginning it can feel new and unfamiliar. A few tears can happen — and that’s okay. This is part of a gentle, guided process of exposure learning, where your child learns how to safely experience the water, control their breath, and build confidence day by day.
They don’t become mermaids overnight… we nurture them 🐚
Real water confidence comes from actually feeling the water — not floating above it. That’s why we avoid puddle jumpers, which keep children in a vertical “drowning posture” and prevent them from learning how their bodies truly move in the water.

Instead, we teach keiki to trust their own buoyancy in the water 🌊

If you are considering ISR we can begin this journey at home:

• During bath or shower time, allow water to gently run down your child’s face without immediately wiping it away. This helps them become more comfortable and relaxed with the sensation.

• For back float acclimation, gently support your keiki on their back and encourage them to rest with their ears in the water. Stay within arm’s reach at all times, whether in the bath or pool, and by creating a safe and calm environment to explore floating.

These small, consistent moments are how little ones begin to transform…

✨ From uncertainty → to confidence
✨ From fear → to calm
✨ From beginner → to mermaid 🧜‍♂️

My goal isn’t just to make swimming “fun” right away — it’s to give your keiki life-saving skills, independent skills, and a true love for the water that lasts a lifetime.

Because one day, when they fall in…
they won’t panic — they’ll float, breathe, and swim.

And that’s when you’ll see it…
your keiki has become a mermaid 💙

Mahalo for trusting me in the process 🌊🤍

Drowning prevention cannot wait.

Recent reports highlight what so many of us here in Hawaiʻi already know—too many lives are being lost in our waters, and for years, meaningful intervention has fallen on families, communities, and local advocates. Nearly half of Hawaiʻi’s keiki don’t know how to swim, even though drowning remains the leading cause of death for children under 15.

At ISR Kahala, drowning prevention is not just a program—it is our purpose. Every lesson we teach is rooted in survival, confidence, and respect for the water. We are committed to equipping keiki with life-saving skills through Infant Swimming Resource (ISR), because prevention starts before an emergency happens.

We also believe access matters. That’s why scholarships are available for families who demonstrate financial need. No keiki should miss out on life-saving swim and survival skills due to cost. Making drowning prevention a priority means making it accessible.

Together—with families, community partners, and continued advocacy—we can change the narrative. One keiki. One family. One lesson at a time.

Mahalo for standing with us in keeping Hawaiʻi’s keiki safe. 💙

No matter the season, always remember there is no substitute for adult supervision, as drowning does not have a season. Please use Constant Eyes On (CEO) supervision whenever your child is around any body of water. A child can be in serious trouble in a matter of seconds. Please make sure your child’s ISR Self-Rescuetm skills are refreshed regularly, even during the winter months.

“My favorite part of teaching babies to swim is guiding them as they discover new skills and watching their confidence grow—because that’s when the real magic happens.”

During early childhood, a child’s brain is undergoing rapid growth and change through a process called neuroplasticity — the brain’s ability to form new neural connections based on experiences.
This window of intense brain development is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to build critical life skills that become deeply wired into a child’s brain.

ISR (Infant Swimming Resource) survival swim lessons use this powerful period of neuroplasticity to teach children how to independently float, breathe, and swim to safety if they fall into water.
Because young children’s brains are especially “plastic” — meaning flexible and ready to learn — they are able to quickly and effectively master complex survival skills through short, consistent, daily lessons.

In ISR lessons:
• Repetition strengthens neural pathways for floating, swimming, and breathing independently.
• Problem-solving skills are activated as children learn to adjust to different situations (falling in face first, sideways, fully clothed, etc.).
• Emotional engagement deepens learning, because survival skills involve meaningful real-world challenges that the brain flags as important.
• Motor skills and coordination improve, supporting overall cognitive and physical development beyond the water.

By harnessing the brain’s natural plasticity during this critical time, ISR lessons help children not only survive but also build confidence, resilience, and body awareness — skills that will benefit them for life.

Early survival swim lessons are not just teaching the body — they are shaping the brain.
