His argument centers on the idea that producing and charging a single BEV can generate more carbon emissions than running three hybrids, particularly in countries where electricity is still heavily reliant on fossil fuels. Toyoda backed this up by citing Toyota’s own numbers: the company has sold 27 million hybrids, which he says have reduced CO₂ emissions to the same degree as 9 million BEVs would have. But if Toyota had built those 9 million BEVs in a country like Japan—where most power comes from thermal sources—total emissions would have actually increased.
