The Capitulation of Cahuenga (the bloodless agreement) was signed between John Frémont and Andrés Pico on January 13, 1847, ending hostilities in California during the Mexican-American War. Interestingly enough, this agreement was signed at Campo de Cahuenga, near present-day Universal City in Los Angeles. This marked the surrender of Mexican forces in California. Californios (Mexican residents) who surrendered were granted amnesty and allowed to return home peacefully, keeping their property. They were also given the option to become U.S. citizens. It effectively ended the Mexican-American War in California, months before the overall war ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848.
