Q: How much water does it take for a child to drown?

A: As much as it takes to cover their nose and mouth. Usually that's 2 inches.

Baby pools might seem harmless—but when left full, they can quickly become a silent danger. More than 100 children under the age of 5 have drowned in portable kiddie pools in the US, according to CPSC data. That’s over 100 preventable tragedies.

These drownings often happen when parents or caregivers step away for just a moment. All it takes is 30 seconds.

Here’s what to do when play time is over:
• Always drain the pool immediately after use.
• Store it upright and out of reach,
• Never rely on emptying it “later”—a child can slip away from you, get in the water, and drown in just 30 seconds.

Could your child float in a Carhartt jacket? Adding clothes, shoes, and a regular diaper can add up to 11 pounds for children. That is a lot of weight to compared to their little bodies and we want to make sure they are confident in their aquatic problem-solving skills. Today’s star student is in the cutest Hot Wheels pajamas and showed us that safety skills don’t depend on fancy swimsuits — they depend on practice. Whether it’s pajamas, play clothes, a swimsuit, or even winter clothes, children need to learn how their body feels and moves in the water.

That’s why we focus on aquatic problem solving during survival swim lessons. Rolling to breathe. Finding a float. Getting to the wall. Staying calm. These are skills that SAVE lives.

Because here’s the truth: DROWNING KNOWS NO SEASON. It doesn’t matter if it’s summer sunshine or a chilly morning. Water is EVERYWHERE— pools, lakes, bathtubs, toilets, ponds, splash pads — and children need to be prepared.

We practice in different scenarios, so kids build real confidence, not just pool comfort. Pajamas and all. 💙

Bathing suit color is a safety choice, not just a style choice.

In a pool, lake, or river, blue/teal/gray/white and most “water-colored” prints blend in fast. Movement + glare + waves + shadows can make a child disappear in seconds—even when you’re looking right at the water.
